View Full Version : Anamorphic Avi's?

I know that most DVD's come in anamorphic, "squished" format. But is there any way that DVD's rips could ever be kept in that anamorphic format until playback, just so they could conserve space? Or would the normal encoding artifacts appear to be very strange when the image was stretched back out for viewing?

i never use 'correct' ar when capturring, and stretching during playback is excellent with zoom player in example. if u want an even better resize algorithm, u can usee ffdshow.

so i guess u should try and see if YOU like the results. my guess is that you would ;)

cheers

I use Gordian Knot. Is there any way for me to subvert the correction of the aspect ratio in it? Better still, can I do the usual crop stuff and be left with nothing but the anamorphic image and no black letterboxing for 2.35:1 movies?

i guess u can edit the avisynth file yourself for maximum tweaked settings..

Better only cut off the horizontal black bars if you stay with the full resolution, not the black on the sides of a movie. Because if your horizontal resolution isn't a multiple of 32, you'll have a much worse compressibility i.e. either worse quality or a bigger file. Before you stay with an anamorphous format, make sure that the compressibility isn't much below 50%. Better yet, encode a portion of the movie at the quantizer you're like to get as an average and make sure you like the looks of it. It really depends on the individual movie.

If you use XviD there really isn't much that speaks for cutting off the black bars, it doesn't save much space. But I do it anyway  - only because my CPU is too slow to decode the full resolution.

Oh, just disable the cropping-command in the .avs-file. Either delete it or type a '#' before the line.

I don't know how you want to 'save space' by this, though. Do you want to downsize the movie in anamorphous format? In that case, specify an aspect-ratio of '1:1' in Gordian Knot. It won't look hot, though, I tried it.
