Well, as the topic name says, I've started encoding Anime (DBZ) in VirtualDub using DivX 5.02 encoding from a PAL DVD. Everything works fine, however, I've noticed that the video, when playing, is shaking. How come?

Also I've noticed some ghosting :(. Is there some way to get rid of the ghosting? Or at least reduce it? Thnx in advance!

Most likely your source is interlaced!
So read the guides.

PAL Animes often have a bad transfer from original NTSC source. So there are often combined and/or interlaced frames from different scenes mixed in on frame.
Sorry, no way to get rid of them. But you can try avisynth with decomb. Sometimes decomb does miracles on animes. Read over at the avisynth forum. Look for "decomb".

good luck!

Uli

U probably have those Madman DVD's from Australia, right?
Uli is right, Those DVD's are poorly transferred from NTSC to PAL and u won't be able to do much about that shaking and ghosting. I know because i have those DVD's too and tried to deinterlace them. Even Decomb doesn't help, I even get soem sort of flickering/shimmering(don't know if i phrased it right)in static frames(especially the intro of the episode) that doesn't appear if i use fast deinterlace (verticalreduceby2) in aviSynth, even Smartdeinterlace in both Vdub and Avisynth doesn't help. I haven't really tried it with GreedyHMA though. About the shaking, it's on the original DVD source too, i checked it on a standalone DVD player, so i don't think it can be fixed at all. I wish u much luck with encoding them, u will need it!!:D :D :D :D

Also, I still have to make my dvd rom region free :(

Thanx for the support you guys! ;)

:D :D :D :D :D :D hehehe... correct :D (Nederlander? :D)

BTW, do you have a clue if you can get NTSC DBZ DVD's in The Netherlands? Like Free Record Shop maybe? Or do they only import the Madmans? :(

BTW2: I've noticed that the shaky video isn't on the whole dvd :S
I just encoded the intro, and it didn't have any shaky video at all!

I don't know of any Dutch shop that sells NTSC DBZ DVD's and FRS certainly doesn't, maybe someone else on this Forum who is dutch might know.

U mean the intro at the very beginning of the DVD, the one with the compilation. That's because that isn't part of the main DVD, it's probably differently processed!!

BTW, do you have a clue if you can get NTSC DBZ DVD's in The Netherlands?Did you try Media Markt in Amsterdam (or whatever that big multimedia store is called, it's been a while)? They have a lot of import and the largest collection of anime I've seen here as well (which still isn't a lot :( ).
Otherwise you can always try international orders.
