IVTC or deinterlace

Hi, I need some help with this one, I have a movie (NTSC) when I run it through DVD2AVI it shows up as FILM,FILM XX%, and NTSC all three in no particular order. I've searched this forum and found if 2 out of 5 frames are interlaced then I need to perform IVTC, well I can't find any pattern to the interlacing, there will be 2 interlaced frames, then 40 non-interlaced, then it will go on for awile with no interlacing, and somtimes 5 or 6 interlaced frames in a row, I'm going frame by frame in DVD2AVI to find this out. Can anyone suggest what to do when there is no pattern to all this.

Yes. Test an IVTC and or de-interlacing alone, and examine the results frame by frame.

If your lucky enough to use AviSynth in your encoding process, you can preview different processes, or different settings, without having to do an encoding, just by previewing the .avs script in vdub.

Without it, I'd excerpt a 30-second or 1-minute scene using the [ and ] buttons in dvd2avi, so that each test will only take a few minutes to encode.

Or you could just do it the easy way. Save a project file from dvd2avi with no alteration to type, run it through vfapi to put the wrapper round the outside then use the deinterlace feature in virtualdub. Always worked for me.

Thanks for the reply Nitro, I tried it and it seemed to work OK with a small interlaced test file. Just one question, when saving the file what compression method do you use, I eventualy want to re-author this back to DVD format.
