I think the DVD drive of the PS2 is not able to read CDR's, not even with the Linux kit installed. Maybe there's a hack for this problem too, I don't know.

well me or anybody i know has ever had a problem running any cdr on ps2. :D linux or no linux. cdrw i have no idea.

i find the whole idea of runing "non-standard" software(s) on consoles a great idea - indeed done correctly there would be no need for third party divx capable hardware players. im no hardware guru but i believe the ps2 would be amply capable in pure hardware requirements of being a good player. i wonder if the embedded video memory would make programming a player different from a platform such as dreamcast,xbox or pc that have larger amounts of video ram ?.

just think neo-neko, House ( and everyone else ) - one day the ps2 may even be capable of _encoding_ under a linux os and with the hdd. if the xbox ever gets hacked ( as in hdd more or less now i guess, seems the last big hurdle in xbox corruption atm, ther are already linux plans afoot sposedly ;) ) ... now that is really exciting. cost wise it would compete with pc ( never anything near on performance, but in cost/power terms ) for an encoding / viewing box. and it broadband capable. m$ would just be creaming themselves with joy ... :D s3x0r

u can run CDR on ps2 if u only chip it

well me or anybody i know has ever had a problem running any cdr on ps2.Modded PS2's, I guess? Because I know someone who had a problem running CDRs on a PS2 (and who still has problems because currently there's a chip-shortage in Germany so he has to wait...)

However I think the PS2 is not a really great stand-alone player because it's louder than a quiet PC! I was surprised to hear that thing recently - it's almost as loud as my overclocked Athlon with 4 HD's... the fan-sound of the PS2 is pretty annoying. So why go through the hassles of making a PS2 a stand-alone player when you can use a cheap Duron system that will be more quiet?

Ok, I have the linux kit, so heres my experience so far:

- no cdrs without mod chip.
- no divx3.11/divx/xvid playback in a sensible speed. (Yes technically it works, but kinda at 3 fps)
- mpeg playback works.
- mpeg2 playback might sometime work, asa someone figures out how to use the hardware acceleration.
- perhaps mpeg4 can work if someone figures out how to use the mpeg2 hardware acceleration for it (if thats possible at all). The main proc is certainly too slow.

Me and some guys were trying to make a bootcd that could run divx movies.. But the main Cpu just was to damn slow, we didnt optimezed the code 100% but with my cululations it wouldnt be possible even if we did optimize.

For most of you who don´t speak Spanish, I have transltated some parts of the document (sorry about my bad English).


DivX for PS2
A group of Spanish programers has developed a DivX player for PlayStation2. PCWorld Magazine (from Spain) has spoken with the creators and has had access to a beta version. The impression has been more than good, we could enjoy DivX playback in our console with a near to DVD quallity.

The player only wights 1.5 MB and is capable of playing smoothly DivX videos at 640x288 resolution with a bitrate of 1000. Supports all DivX versions till DivX 5.02, opendivx and xvid.

At the moment, the player is in Beta phase and, even thou it is 100% operative, the creators don´t want to release it publicly till the add some good GUI, long filenames reading, subtiltes and so.
The hope to have all this in not a long time and be able to give international PS2 community the first free DivX player

We have to mention that all the development has been done with no oficial GNU tools so we face the problem of loading the player in our console.

Ive tried the beta version of ps2reality and it looks promising.
A boot cd image is created on your pc. Burn using Nero. Use the CD in your CHIPPED ps2 and a menu comes up. Swap to a cd or dvd with avi file(s)on. then hit play and it allows you to choose the file to play. quality is good but I have experienced some freezes. Hopefully this should be sorted out when it moves on from beta stage.
