What is the best authoring software? Sprucup/Maestro/Sceanrist?
Sounds like Maestro is high on the list?
Does anyone know if you can import chapter breaks in Maestro?

To quote part of forum rule #12
"Do not ask "what's best" because this question cannot be answered objectively. Each and everyone has their own view about what's best in a certain area.
The best is what works best for you!"

I'm going to step into the fray and answer this one based on my own experience (my opinions only, others may disagree).
Maestro and Scenerist are probably the two most popular programs mentioned here. Both have their own strengths and weaknesses.
Maestro is quite easy to use, and supports most of the DVD authoring spec necessary to make commercial-quality DVDs. Multiple video angles, multiple audio and subtitle tracks, and an intuitive drag & drop interface make it relatively easy to use. Sort of the "visual basic" for DVD creation.
Scenerist is the DVD authoring software for those who like to program in C. It can do more than Maestro because it allows lower-level control over the authoring process. The bad thing here is that because of the lower-level control, it also is more labor-intensive to set up projects. The user interface isn't as intuitive as Maestro. Unless you have a manual for this one, or someone to show you the ropes, count on some frustration.

DVDWise and DVDMaestro are the two I prefer the most. DVDWise has many of the features of Maestro at a fraction of the price. But Wise doesn't do a few things that Maestro does such as chapters and menu audio.

isnt this thread asking for a fight? just like the P4 v Athlon threads...
DVDMaestro is easier to use, but both it and scen. do everything the DVDSpec allows (scen. might do a few extra things, but i havent actually played with it much)

Hi
Being a relative newbie I feel this was a bit of a frustrated post, there are some many different bits of software out there I found myself going dizzy trying to read up on them all.
If this post has caused some friction I must apologies, I shall use that search button next time.
Thanks for all the posts, shall do some experiments based on these posts.

Because nobody else mentioned it, I thought I might give my 0.2cents too. I've played a bit with several authoring progs over the last weeks and the one I finally chose is Sonic Fusion. I don't know why but nobody on this forum seems to have used that one. ReelDVD and Maestro look also quite 'straight-forward' where as Scenarist as mentioned earlier by Nogami, it is pretty damn difficult to get into it. Even with the manual you'll end up getting crazy ... but then again, if you want most control on your disc, that's probably the one to go for ... and probably the one or one of the few which also support DTS.
But again ... just my .2 cents ... no flaming please
