View Full Version : Which CCE version to use?

I'm rebuilding one of my DV-PC's and I've had to re-install windows and all of my DVD related software. This is actually a good thing, as the machine was starting to slow down and give other strange performance issues.

Question: What version of CCE should I install? I've been using 2.5SP for my encoding for use with DVDMaestro. Should I consider one of the newer versions? Is the speed or quality any better?

Any advice is appreciated.

I would assume that versions newer than 2.5 have increased in quality somewhat. However the main drawback that keeps me from using them is that after 2.5 you could no longer import avs files for frameserving purposes. There is a program called Link2 that is supposed to let you use avs files in newer versions of CCE however it only works if you're doing straight re-encoding. If you're like me and do a lot of PAL to NTSC conversion, then forget it, Link2 wont work.

I have heard that version 2.64 is going to have support for avs files again. I've got my fingers crossed.

Hope this helps.

(um...make that version 2.66, oops :D )

I have a bought-and-paid-for CCE 2.64. It doesn't freeze on my Athlon XP 1.6 the way the demo does, but it seems to have a problem with long filenames, crashing out occasionally.

I bought it because I was so impressed with CCE 2.5 and because it has radically improved compression and picture quality over my previous MPEG2 solution.

However, 2.64 seems to be a lot more 'buggy' than 2.5.

You'd have to have the eyes of an android to spot the visual differences in encoding between the two versions. If I could choose between them, I would go for 2.5. Alas I own 2.64. I hope the new version clears up the bugs.
