Upgrade Win98--->Win2k,ME?

sup everyone,
I am thinking about Upgrading my other computer which has Win98, I'm thinking about upgrading to Win2k or ME? Also, I have XP (home edition) on the other computer and one of my main programs that I use for audio editing isn't compatible with XP, but is ok with win98.So I'm looking forward to upgrade to Win2k pro edition.I will have to backup my files onto a cd-r/rw right?;) So, I am looking forward to get some suggestions.:)

hmmm.. Upgrading....

Ok, better you burn all your important data into CD-RW,
and format the old OS ;) And install the new OS as
fresh as new OS.

Second rule is better stay with the old OS if you satisfaid
with it and have no hardware and software compatibility
problem at all, unless you need new "feature" which the old
OS can't provide, like Win98 (FAT 32) is not support file
over 4 GB, so you have to install the new OS which support it.

I still love my Win98 SE, light, fast, and awesome! ;)

If it doesnt work in Xp it very likely wont work on 2k either i would not advise anyone to use ME, 98 is much better IMO.

Preference for Windows OSes IMO

2K (running 2K Advanced Server atm (Terinal server is cool))
XP (might reconsider when the service pack is out (well when .net server is out anyway server does extra stuff i dont need but want anyway (BTW if you boot .net server into safe mode it still says its windows XP :) ))

I guess, I'll have to stick with win98, the only reason I wanted to upgrade was coz of NTFS.Or I might later on get another computer with Win2k.

Never "upgrade" your Windows installs. And never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever mix NT and 9x! If Microsoft gives you the option to "upgrade" you windows install you will have a better time reformating and doing a clean install. NT 5.0 and 5.1 are far better than the 9X versions. But only with clean installs. Backup all your data and install clean NT. You will thank yourself for it.

I'm using Win2k pro here and loving it, Win98 was an unstable peice of Crap (wouldn't ever touch ME!!!) I have Tried XP pro but don't really like the GUI its far too Nice nice!! Yuk!!

When XP takes a dive, its a case of 'Format C' stick to win2000 there's lots to learn in that and its the basics of WinXP :)

Ideally, you need 3 machines... (I have 2) 1 with win98LITE, 1 with Win2000 pro for the real working machine and 1 with XP for playing about with an learning about the OS.... Oh!! and throw a Linux partition on the 98 machine just for fun! (darn confusing!! LOL) :D

Without a shadow of a doubt, WinME is the most feeble, over-rated, unstable, buggy, crash-inducing piece of nonsense I've ever had the misfortune to use. It's no more than a "toy" operating system. I can see #NOTHING# to commend it over any other OS - it's right at the bottom.

Am I being a little 'over-the-top'; exagerating ??

Well, if you don't believe me then perhaps you should know that even senior Micro$oft engineers have been known to secretly admit, off the record, that it's an embarrassment.

Win98, Win2k, WinXP - all of these have something to be said for them, so I won't inflict my favourite on you (besides I've made that very clear in another recent thread! ;) ).

Personally, i wouldn't use NT, but that's not cos it's a bad OS - it's just that it does not support Plug-&-Play, and EVERYTHING needs to be configured manually, so it's only for network administrators and hardcore tweakers really. To USE it's great, though.

So, in short, I would suggest that, if you DO upgrade, you should look at either Win2k or WinXP. Look at the other recent thread I started on the topic, for some informative discussion on the pros and cons of each. Win98 is fine, but I think you would enjoy the extra stability and speed (yes, speed) you would gain from 2K or XP. Win98 doesn't handle memory very efficiently at all, which is one reason contributing to the dreaded "blue screen of death" that so often rears it's ugly head in Win9x systems (and the blue screens come thick-and-fast, like AVALANCHES with WinME because it still manages memory poorly, but additionally eats it up far more than Win9x - in other words, a recipe for disaster). One word of warning - make sure you have AT LEAST 128mb RAM before even thinking about upgrading.

How about multi OS? I read it in a post somewhere today. I got no clue how the hell it works.But obviously it has 2 OS?

there's a couple of ways to do this...
the easiest being this:

1/ install Win98 on C:\
2/ install Win2000 on D:\

you get the choice to Install win2k on a different drive when installed from Within Win98. Windows 2k then Puts a few files on the C:\ partition and brings up a 'boot menu' on startup, giving you a choice of which to boot into. :)

The Not so easy, But slightly better way:

install whatever windows OS you feel, then Install 'Partition Magic 7'
and learn how it works.... after a while (you might struggle at first) you'll get the hang of it and be able to create and install Lots of different OS's all on there own partitions.
*just remember the 'Boot Magic Floppy' that the key! ;)

Windoze ME - Has the SAME amount of bugs as Windoze 98SE. BUT - it runs faster. Granted they are different bugs than 98, but there's the same amount. But as I said earlier, it does run faster.

Windoze 2k - That's what I would use if I was you. Well, actually, that is what I use;) It's stable, i have a hard time crashing it. Runs well and can run a couple of weeks doing multiple different tasks without reboot...

Windoze XP - I don't know enough about it running on my comptuer yet. Just installed it this weekend to test it out. Although I don't give that OS internet access. I'm concerned about that one. It pulls some wierd stuff on my firewall. I am wondering if it talks home as I have heard before...

I unhooked my hdd and installed win2k on another
drive, just in case my old hardware was not supported
by Win2k. It went well. This was when Win2k first came out.
