use GeForce4 for encoding?

does anybody know if you can use the GeForce4-cpu to encode divx-movies, mp3-files or anything else?

No, it's currently not possible and it's probably not worth the time exploring the possibility. Graphic cards have nothing that would aid in the encoding of mp3s and videos. They mainly concentrate on triangles, texturing, lighting and so forth. None of these things would really help and might actually make the process longer (if it's possible at all).

The only usefull thing the GF4 might be able to do, would be to decode the source mpeg2 video stream. If I recall correctly, the GF4 has an inbuild mpeg2 decoder (I might be mistaken).

And I think someone once developed an app, that used the Hollywood+ card for decodeing vobfiles, to an uncompressed video stream. But conversion rate was limited to about 15 fps, probably due to bandwith and latency problems on the PCI bus.

Using the decoder on the GF4 might allow for faster conversion rates, because it sits one the AGP bus.

But of course I would never even try, to develop such an app, nor ask anyone else to do so.
