View Full Version : How to deinterlace PAL source with Frames 1-13 normal and 14-25 interlaced

Hello :)

I have a PAL interlaced source that looks rather strange to me.
Playing it back frame by frame there are 13 frames that look normal (they don't look interlaced) then there are 12 frames that are interlaced. It then appears to repeat this process over and over.

I tried using GORDIAN KNOT a few weeks ago (it was version 0.26 beta) and simply checked the FIELD DEINTERLACE option. This resulted in what I think I've heard of as GHOSTING. For instance, when someone was moving, they would sometimes leave a "trail" behind them ... like they temporarily smudged onto the screen.

So anyone have any suggestions?

I'm about to try again but this time I will be using FAST DEINTERLACE although I've heard that produces only so-so quality.

It's a DVD I own so I can rip it and try over and over again but since a full length movie takes me about 8 to 9 hours to encode, well, as you can imagine suggestions are more than welcome.

P.S.
This is the UK PAL DVD release of THE RING 2 which is a Japanese film. It appears to have been made with film, not video, but since Japan uses NTSC I wonder if this might be a NTSC to PAL video transfer VS a true 24fps film to 25fps PAL transfer.

P.S.
In case anyone is curious the UK PAL DVD of the first RING movie is true PAL Progressive and encodes VERY well ... too bad the sequel wasn't the same way :(

Are you using the latest ffdshow? I've seen something like this whilst testing the latest. I got around the problem by ticking the 'decode with xvid' box in the ffdshow configuration screens.

Maybe this could help with your ghosting problem (assuming you use ffdshow that is)?

Hello :)

I'm sorta like a newbie but not 100%
Like I use Gordian Knot and I feel like I more or less know what I am doing ('cept sometimes deinterlacing throws me for a loop) but while I am very "good" with computers I'm no programer ... me need a guide.

I use Gordian Knot. Like version 0.26 beta. I've learned how to do a few things in virtual dub and nandub and in the past I even fooled around with DVD2SVCD and DVDx but I'm not even sure what ffdshow is man, although I have heard it used alot, and I've never played around with xvid just DivX 4.12 and now DivX 5.x (and some limited playing around with SVCD though that just took WAY too long to encode on my P3 650Mhz with 128MB RAM Win98 SE computer).

All I know is when I tried to encode using the built in FAST DEINTERLACE option in Gordian Knot 0.26 Beta it crashed either upon or trying to open virtual dub for the first pass.

I agree that 'deinterlacing' is a bit of a black art. However, (with my very limited knowledge of the subject) I didn't know that you could get a video source mixed with non-interlaced and interlaced. Is there TV's out there that are able to switch between the modes (or does that question show up my ignorance?). I will be very interested in the outcome of this thread.

Sorry I could not shine more light on your problems.

This DVD has probably been 'PAL telecined' (not a good name but that's exactly what is going on), i.e. one half frame has been added every 12 full frames! You can easily get it back to original 24fps by using:loadplugin("decomb.dll")
Telecide()
decimate(cycle=25)

And the "fast deinterlace" bug is a known problem with 0.26, there is a circumvention, ye olde search button can help you with that.

Or if you look in the GKnot forum you will find a stick thread named Bug: GKnot 0.26 and Fast Deinterlace (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=25756). Do you think that can be useful?
