Hi all!
I have noticed a bunch of way to convert from FILM to NTSC, NTSC to FILM, PAL to FILM and vice versa, but nothing (as I have seen) about PAL to NTSC directly.
Since DVD players needs the 29.97 framerate in NTSC, I wonder what is the best way to do it.
I have some AVI and MPG that I need to convert and resize to be in the compliant DVD format to do NTSC DVDs.
For the avis, I have separate the audio in a wav file. I have opened CoolEdit, but I don't have a clue on which value to put in the stretch. And does VDub is good to adjust the framerate to 29.97 ?
I just want to be sure to have the good "reciepe" since I have upcoming DVDs from France to convert this way too!!
Thanx in advance guys!
First:
Why do you want to convert? DVD players all over the world play NTSC and PAL without probs...
If you want anyway, then the following works for progressive material:
To convert, you first have to slow down the PAL source-WAV by 23.976/25.0 = 0,95904 x speed or lengthen it by 25.0/23.976 = 1,0427093760427093760427093760427 x time. Whatever applies in cooledit.
Then change the framerate of the avi to 23.976. Then encode to MPEG2 ( using the avi and the slowed wav ) and set pulldown on playback, et voila, there you are ;)
The only problem remains, if the PAL source is interlaced :(
The only solution i know of is: First severely deinterlacing and the rest as above.
But since you have AVIs, they should be progressive.
Good luck.

1) Change the framerate in VD to 23,976fps
2) Change the audio duration to:
original length x25 /23,976 = new duration
3) encode to MPEG2/MP2 conserving the 23,976fps framerate
4) add the appropriate flag to your MPEG stream
=> perfect DVD quality! (I wonder, why Anime DVD authors have to telecine the video anyway, this makes quality only worse on the DVD, and makes our rippers life to hell!)

@Uli:
Thanx for your reply! I am really new to this and I thought it wasn't possible to play a PAL DVD on my standalone dvd player! I don't have to do a resize on it (720x480) to make it standard?
I know I will still have to set the DVD region free but it's not a problem in there huh ?
@Uli and DJ Bobo :
Thanx for your receipes :) I will try them right now! As for the conversion of the DVDs, I will set one region free and try to burn it as it already is, just to look :)
Thanx again, I was really in the meadow with the cows I think! And you saved me lots of precious time! :sly:
Ciao!

I forgot: If you take a PAL DVD ( 720x576 ) as source you shurely have to additionally resize to 720x480 to make it NTSC compliant.

Great thanx Uli!
But this PAL DVD will only work in my NTSC video if it is mostly FILM huh?
Thanx :)

Ok guys..
Here's the infos of what I have did
Movie info : 25fps, pcm audio 44khz, avi DivX-4 ;) Low-Motion (anyway!)
1- I have extracted the wav from the avi in question. 22:47.012 min.
2- Did a framerate conversion of that avi from 25 to 23.976 same length approx : 22:47:454.
3- Did all my resize and filters for that new file. same lenght too.
4- Took the extracted wav file, and here's my problem here.. I have 3 radio button choices for "Stretching Mode" when I click on Transform->Time/Pitch->Stretch ( in CoolEdit )
->Time stretch (preserve pitch)
->Pitch shift (preserve tempo)
->Resample (preserve nothing)
I have used the Resample. I have calculated the value length of my wav and it's 1367.012 seconds. So using the formula of 1367.012 * 1.04xxxxxxx, that gave me this : 1425.39xxxxx
but instead of giving me an output file of this, it outputted me 1485.971 sec. that's approximately 1 min and 1 sec over the video file length!
Did I miss something somewhere ??
Help please 'cause I am really not even familiar with CoolEdit and I will probably never use it instead of just removing noise and/or fix the good framerate audio!
Thanx in advance!

About point 2: making the framerate conversion in VD will change the duration, it won't be the same or nearly the same.
About point 4: you have to use Time Stretch. And if it's not time stretch, just experiment with a little file, till you get what you want :D (sorry I use WaveLab not CoolEdit, that's why I can't tell you exactly)

.... ( some days, trial and errors, and god damning words later ) .....
I have just referenced again on this post because I had to do today the method DJ Bobo just gave me above.. Before doing that, I have tried by memory to do it... :mad: But one thing were wrong.. I didn't set the stretching on "Time Stretch", but on "ReSample" ... I have noticed it still makes a desync at progressive long time.
So my question here is : What is the "DAMNED" difference between the 3 ones : Time Stretch, Pitch Shift, and ReSample ?? :confused:
@DJ Bobo and @Uli : I have noticed that I have forgot to thank you about your methods and I'm really sorry, this was the least I should have do. As I read your messages some days ago, I just ran into CoolEdit to test that and I have forgot to get back to you.
Thanx again guys !
