View Full Version : Will there be an option to do DVD to DVD-R in later versions

I currently use DVD2SVCD to convert DVDs to DVD-R by allowing it to convert the audio to MP2 and re-encode the movie to 720 x 576PAL and manually stop the process when it finishes CCE. I then use DVDit to take the audio and movie and create the DVD-R.

In future version will we be able to select the output of DVD and have a bitrate matrix for this mode and a seperate one for SVCD. Also could an option be put in to stop after CCE and perhaps later versions could generate a DVD Folder view that could be burnt using Nero etc.

Wouldn't this do what you want:

1. In the misc. tab select DVD2SVCD Level = Advanced
2. In the CD Image tab select "Don't make images"
3. In the bbMPEG tab under Advanced Settings DoubleClick on MPEG2 (not dvd, as bbmpeg wont create dvd compliant streams)
4. In the CCE tab under Advanced Settings Select "Close all GOPs"
5. In the bitrate tab change the cd sizes to 1024. Set the max. bitrate to 6500 and min to 2000 and max. avg to 6000
6. In the frameserver tab select resize to "DVD 720*480/576" or "CVD 352*480/576"
7. In the audio tab select "Do Not Convert Audio"
8. In the DVD2AVI tab set Luminance Gain to 5

I am however a bit unsure on pt. 5

i thought dvd was 9.5MB/sec max....

anywho...

Most DVDs do not go that high, they hit about 5 to 6 average.

@Nsanity, Welcome aboard also you can download bitrate viewer and view the vob files of any dvd movie, you will find that faceman101 is pretty much correct, and that a movie is around 5,000, 6000 not 9,000.. but just like anything else sometimes it can peak up to 9,000.

I use DVD2SVCD b2 and I can see no way to stop the generation of the resize 480,480 script in the avisynth script commands.

I uses DVD2sVCD to make DVD-R with permanent subs .....so all I need is to kill the resize command.....any idea how to do this?

I wouldn't mind stopping the bbmpeg attempt to remux after the video encode as well.
Even though I use the "no change to audio" check box. It still wants to remux the audio & video.

Select Advanced Level in the Misc. Tab. Then you'll have a resize to option in the frameserver tab.

I'm curious what settings you use to convert DVD to DVD-R w/ DVD2SVCD. I've tried numberous times, and i keep getting errors regarding the GOP for my video files. Ulead DVD MovieFactory says "The Gop is not valid for a DVD" or something to that effect, and DVDit PE gives me a similar error. Since you seem to have experience regarding this, can you please tell me what i'm doing wrong?

Did you try what DVD2SVCD wrote above? If you do you should be able to create DVDs like that with D2S no problem.

Yes but how about dvd2svcd authoring the dvd image and only reencoing if it needs to otherwise it just copys the dvd... cool.

Well - I need some help, it seems like this is the best place to ask - I cannot get rid of the audio sync problem - ive followed every tutorial going and i still get the same problem ive tried using ulead, dvdit and spruce up but none work - ive also tried loading in a muxed file but they all error/fall over and the only way to get to recognize the audio and video is to load them in separately - but then end up with the audio out of sync - by about a second or so........had this writer about a year and never managed to get a perfect rip.......end of my teather - anyone?????

dvd2svcd
10th July 2002, 20:59
Ehhhh, are you using DVD2SVCD ?

Mosaic
11th July 2002, 03:26
My exp. has shown that sync probs comes from:

1) Not using DVD2AVI 1.76 .....other versions cause sync anarchy!
2) Orig. Movie itself does not start audio until a few secs have passed.
3) You tried to do Force film when u need IVTC or pure interlace.

Solutions are:
1) Get dvd2avi 1.76
2) Use ac3delaycorrector to force your authoring tool to start the audio later.
3) Inspect the playback in DVD2avi ...if the stats claims FILM 99% after playing for a while then use force film.

If DVD2AVI reports NTSC and u see (by stillframeing) 2 Interlace then 3 motion blur repeated........U gotta use IVTC. IF u see NTSC and no signs of interlaceing ...still USE IVTC.IF u see nTSC and ALL frames are interlaced ...then disable force film and IVTC and encode at 29.97fps.
If u using CCE 2.5 to encode an interlaced TFF movie....it will flip the fields and claim TFF, regardless of the source. U will have to do a PULLDOWN -no 2:3 and make the fields EVEN ...see the pulldown text file on this. With a BFF movie...u will have to PULLDOWN -no 2:3 and make fields ODD.

I just did a movie that had a 13.5 sec delay in the audio......and that movie was released in MAY 2002. I think they're doing that to confuse us.

BTW watch out for movies that switch audio bitrates for the logo/credits....this causes authoring tools to report inconsistent bitrate and choke. U will have to chop off the logo/credits with VOBedit/Vobsplit etc.

right - here we go - i started using the settings as mentioned above and was using the muxed file that dvd turfed out (as per the settings) but the authoring software 3 different types - played the video but with no audio. I then started messing with the settings but still had no luck - then started to try to use the separate audio and video streams which produced the sync problem and thats where im at. with regards to the solution, im using build 3 of the dvd2svcd software which already has the dvdtoavi version that youre talking about, im not sure where the ac3 delay corrector is, ( sorry im not as clever as you, but hey, thats why im here...! )...the second paragraph, well im still studying that one......! Well im gonna go back and have a play - just out of curiosity what youve said needs to be done makes all the "how to" guides on vcdhelp and the like total horseshite.......cos ive been through em all.....

Thanks for your help all the same but i think im gonna need more....

just out of curiosity which is better - to chuck in one complete mpeg (audio and video) or separate streams??

I have been waiting for others to jump on this thread adding some intelligent input or point out the problems with DVD2SVCD's way of "trying" to create a dvd.

When you use DVD2SVCD's method the audio will not be usable by any DVD writer programs. Then when you have DVD2SVCD encode the audio the sound stuters & is way out of sync.

I've loved DVD2SVCD for the last 300 SVCDs, but now its time to start making dvds.

Can anyone help us out?

Mosaic
13th July 2002, 09:08
U have not been reading the threads enuf.

What u ask has been hashed out several times in the last 3 weeks.

U don't used dvd2svcd audio btw ...u use the ac3 audio that dvd2avi strips out for u.

Mosaic
13th July 2002, 09:17
U don't need anymore help ....do what i told u and u have no prob.

Don't ask for more help till u tried what I said.

Always use separate streams.....no muxing.

the guides u mentioned are just GUIDES.....details are up to u.

U can read how to drive a car...but U can't drive a car 'til u tried for a bit. The guide
won't tell u HOW MUCH to turn a wheel or how HARD to press brakes or how FAST to shift a gear.

After 80 dvd-r discs I still learn new things all the time.

What DVD writing/authoring program are you using that will accept this sound. I have tried:

Ulead DVD Workshop
Ulead DVD MovieFactory
Impression 2.1
DVDit! PE
SpruceUp DVD Authoring
Prassi Primo DVD

Share the golden answer, or please point to the thread that I have faile to find.

thanks again

more questions........whats the difference between a "pulldown encoded video" and a encoded video - they are identical size.....just wondered....i have also got a little bit further.....i can either a. get the sync right but the playback is glitchy - like the audio is trying to stay with the video but cant quite - very strange......i did get a synced version working in spruce up but the problem was when i went to write the disc it errored and fell over.....well that were i am so far....

Any more help would be appreciated...

thanks

Ok here is what i have done & it worked.

Found a copy of DVDMaestro (Only program that would accept the AC3 audio as is from DVD2SVCD)
used DVD2SVCDs settings (changed the bitrate to fit DVD - used this calculator )
I also use CBR not VBR
www.vcdhelp.com/calc.htm (http://www.vcdhelp.com/calc.htm)

Take the Pulldown.mpv file &
the only ac3 file & put them in DVDMaestro.

I couldn't burn with Maestro 2.9 & pioneer a04 so i took the
project directory with all the vobs & ifos and burned them
with nero 5.9 (video mode)

Result Perfect!

Thank you DVD2SVCD,

I hope this helps some people, unlike some of the posts left above.

PS. SPRUCE did accept my audio (must name .ac3 file same as .mpv file)
But it crashed on dvd-write. It may also have worked to grab the video dir created with spruce!

Right - i think i have a bit of a result......so far........ive burnt a single chapter to a dvd-rw and it looked like it worked.......so while im typing this its rendering a whole film.....

1. stripped out using smartripper using the demux way.....
2. Ended up with the audio and video
3. used re-empeg and guessed the bitrate....ok for a test.....
4. loaded up spruce up (only problem was, was that it couldnt read the aspi layer whereas all my other software, smartripper for one...could.) tried about 3 or 4 different aspi's but none worked.
5. chucked in the remuxed (squashed) video and the unmodified audio which it took...first time ever!!
6. Cos it couldnt see the aspi layer it couldnt connect to the writer.
7. Then...from what i can remember i saved it out as tile or something like that.....there were 2 options one was image that didnt work so i took the other which spat out the video and audio_ts
8. Loaded up primo selected the data disc option loaded the 2 files in and hey presto.

Now thats for only one chapter as i have been experimenting for god knows how long.....

Hope this helps the rest of you newbies like me

Im still in the middel of rendering - now i did guess the bitrate....but it seems to be a lot smaller than i thought, i just moved the slider to where i thought it should be in relation to the size of the file that i was re-rendering......so, does anyone know how to get the slider to the right place as it seems that it has no relation to the figure that the bitrate counter gave me.....i know it does but i cant see it....can anyone explain

Thanks

comfysofa,

Are you just creating a "movie only" DVD-R ? If so, use DVD2SVCD and CCE - You don't need to use a bitrate calculator - Just put the desired output size in the CD tab - (I use 4600 megs) when I an making a movie only DVD-R. The resulting mpv & AC3 file will equal 4600 megs. import these into Maestro and set the movie to first play , compile and burn using Nero 5.5.8.0 and your all set.

Cheers

I been using a bitrate calc of 585000/mins - audiokbps.

All I have to do is set the tgt size u say?

Must try it.

fletch
15th July 2002, 11:30
I use these settings for most movies - Max to 8500 , Min 300 Max Average to 4500 - and then set the output size in the bitrate tab. DVD2SVCD does the rest... Using variations on this, its quite simple to keep menus, and extras as well.

cheers

Fletch - ive tried using the dvd2svcd software to do the job but it doesnt work - not matter what i try - always get the "sound out of sync result" - i would love to use dvd2svcd to do the conversion....but i cant get it to work - it does the job and turfs out the file, but the sync is always out......if poss could you email me your dvd2svcd template, then i could try that.....

if you do - cheers, very much appreciated

Do you mean to set all of the cd sizes to 4600 or just the fist one? (might not matter)
I never though of that considering the authoring program should break the large file into the correct size VOBS. What do you use for bitrate settings?

I also learned something else:
Do not use Nero 5.5.9.0 only use Nero 5.5.8.0.
I was using 5.9 and sometimes it worked and sometimes I had problems. I then did more reading switched to 5.8 and am fine every time.

If you are having sync problems its not DVD2SVCD, its the way you author the disc. I would recommend DVDMaestro or Spruce.

make sure you use DVD2SVCD's pulldown.mpv and outputed .ac3 file. They are in sync.

comfysofa

Well i am using spruce up at the moment but every time i put the audio and the video together in spruce up in the simulation part thats where i get the problem - again if anyones got a templete they can mail to me id appreciate it.......then ill try that cos its confirmed that those settings work.....

much appreciate it

What kind of PC hardware do u have?

its possible things may be in sync......but are slipping because your system cannot accommodate the a/v datarate.

Interestingly ....the other guy who also had probs and discovered Maestro appears uninterested in sharing info as to "how" he "found" it. Seems he only appreciates one way sharing. Too bad.

Hardware is definately not the issue - used to be a hardware engineer for 2 years.....ive tried it on a p4 1.7 and p4 1.9 and a dual p3 1gig - always with the same results......as i said before if someone has used dvd2svcd and got a working result then mail me the template and ill try it - thatll narrow it down.......

gimme the filename u want.

BTW I use build 2 ....and both CCE 2.5 and Tmpge 2.55.

I just tell DVD2SVCD to leave the audio alone.

After it encodes.....I get an m2v file and a Extractedaudio.ac3 file.

I use those to reauthor.

I generally force the dvd2avi section to force film or IVTC as I prefer my analysis to the automatic one.

I don't use CD size to determine bitrate ..the min avg bitrate check does that for me

Guys, there's no secret template for DVD2SVCD.. All you need to do is set the bitrate as I described in my earlier post and then set all the CD sizes to 4600meg.

comfysofa: I would bet your sync problems are caused by your DVD authoring software - Guys, do yourself a major favor and locate a copy of DVD Maestro 2.915a... Its an amazing program and you do not need to be a rocket scientist to use it..Scenarist on the other hand....

I can say I have NEVER has a sync problem using this method while using DVD Maestro.. I believe there is a timecode encoded into the AC3 file . Maestro will automatically sync the audio to the video file when you import them....

Also, there are MANY movies that do not even need to be re-encoded..(assuming you only want to keep the movie only) I always use smartripper to rip the mpv and AC3 file first to see if they will fit onto DVD-R WITHOUT re-encoding...

If you guys need further help, send me a PM..

I might write a DVD2SVCD / DVD Maestro tutorial if there is enough interest...?

Cheers

well - ive got over the sync problem now - using spruce up - to create the audio/video_ts files.......but i would like to use dvd2svcd to do the encoding job (using rempeg and the moment), cos as you say it does all the donkey work for you - but im gonna try we7313's ini file to see if that cures the problem - i did get hold of a version of dvd maestro a couple of night ago but havent had chance to use it yet cos both my machines are currently rendering at the moment....i did briefly load it up and it didnt look as easy as spruce up to work ......but hey ho ill have a go anyway......

Comfysofa, check this post out -

http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=29113

It'll get you started.. Also, you would be better off hanging out in the DVD/MiniDVD forum for DVD related answers.. Lots of knowledgable people there and many are using Maestro

Cheers

Hey there,
I have been reading this thread for a few days and got some very good infromation. I am trying to create DVD backups with DVD to SVCD. I tried out DVD to sVCD's method and I ended up with the same problem. I am using Ulead Moviefactory to author and burn my dvds. When I try to load the finished .mpg file into Moviefactory it tells me that it is not a compleint mpeg file. It says to load a compleint dvd, vcd,or svcd file. I am a bit lost. I know it is better to load separate audio and video files but with Moviefacotry it wants a muxed mpg. Also I read that I should use the .ac3 file stript by DVD to AVI but I can not because Moviefactory does not support .ac3 audio. Is the audio that is created in the final .mpg file causing the problem. I hope someone here is familiar with Ulead oviefactory and ca nhelp. I hate to ask questions but i followed the first threads and still no luck. Thanks in advance

Hi blindy007,

Yes, your problem is the audio in your MPG file is AC3.. I would really consider finding a copy of a program that supports AC3 rather than down convert the audio..
Failing that, just ammend the audio tab settings to create 48khz audio and it should work (I think... )

lo all

can subtitles be ripped and inluded on the dvdr using dvd2svcd?
or do they have to be ripped seperately and converted to a file type that spruce/maestro/scenarist will accept?

thank you

Rip them seperately using Subrip - Takes 5 minutes. (Assuming you are using Maestro)

Yeah Right

I have been using dvd2svcd to make my last 10 dvd-R. It works like a charm evrytime. The only 2 options im missing is to rip the subtitle and chapterlist, så evrything is ready to import into maestro.

So Mr. DVD2SVCD if your bored in the future, those 2 features would be desired.
