As I read somewhere Lucas announced that SW E2 DVD will not be readable on computer DVD drives...

As I read somewhere Lucas announced that SW E2 DVD will not be readable on computer DVD drives...Good luck to Mr. Lucas, but I think the DVD then won't be readable on half of all current DVD standalone players. Many standalones are using computer dvd drives (like all mp3-capable standalones)

...at the risk of tempting fate, why is he even BOTHERING to use anti-PC protection? WHY don't the big guys ever LEARN from their feeble attempts? It is a fact that no matter who does what, in the way of protection, there is ALWAYS someone just as intelligent / resourceful working for the good guys (i.e. #US# :D ).

Witness the fiasco of the "protected" CDs (I might be wrong, but I think they were the "Cactus" ones...), whose PC-protection, in the name of anti-ripping, was defeatable with a simple pen-line / masking tape strip on the outer perimeter of the disk, where the offending false track was placed. As "theReal" so astutely stated - all these so-called protections have, as their achilles heel, a necessity to still operate correctly on less "intelligent" players, which basically means anything NOT on a PC, such as a standalone. There is only just so much scope for altering the spec and yet retaining full compatibility with the DVD spec, and the installed base of standalone hardware. I'm still not even sure WHY Mr.Lucas is bothered about backing up of SW2 ANYWAY - the vast majority of people would rather buy the genuine disk than download a Div-X of inferior quality, and anyone backing up their own DVDs has already paid their dues to his fat wallet anyway. The number of people backing up rental DVDs is also by far in the minority - it's just so much hassle to re-encode and author a DVD-R. It's really beyond me. Perhaps people might be less inclined to copy disks in the latter manner, if the disks weren't so greedily priced in the first place. I know this would certainly hold true for CDs which, in the UK, are DISGUSTINGLY high-priced, and have somehow managed to escape numerous investigations, in this regard, over the checquered history of the format.

Oh yes, and it'll contain only black pictures surrounded by 6.1 silence.

Come on, it'll take a few days (if not even hours) till the first crack has put it on a file share and the longest will be to upload.

BUT keep in mind the copy protection are not made for us it's made for the vast majority and unfortunately this group of people will suffer from it.

Call it whatever you want, I call it A WASTE OF MONEY AND RESOURCES. It'll make a lot of bad press as the crappy Harry Potter bonus DVD did in EMEA a big shame...

I don't know of the technical side, but I know that episode I and II sucks when compared to the originals. They would be only b-class films if they wasn't star warses.

I can't imagine any method of preventing PCs from reading a DVD that will play on a less sophisticated device like a standalone that couldn't be easily defeated. In fact, I can think of only one way, an invalid UDF (most standalones only need to find the VIDEO_TS folder and video_ts.ifo, the rest is linked by the ifo). That would, like the CD before it, violate the standards (and recall that Sony and others condemned the protected CD).

To further what Arky said, and as css illustrated, there is little they can do that a world full of networked hackers can't defeat. Remember, they develope these schemes in secret, and not always with the brightest minds in the business (that's how we got css, thankfully)

And, lastly, I can't stand jar-jar, ruined both episodes for me.

i know of plenty of people who think divx is the same quality as DVD

I know this is off-topic and then it's not. Is there really nowhere an DVD release of episodes 4 to 6? The quality of VHS drives me crazy and the laser disc stuff, well, I don't think that was a big success after all. I even don't know where to buy a laser disc...

As far as I know the older movies were never released on DVD which is a shame. It's just something like archiving an important part of modern cinematic history to me.

O.K., that's nonsense but I loved those movies.

Ummm, how could he be an analog freak if he shot Episode 2 completely in digital? This is probably all a rumor (about copy protection) and not true. I find it unlikely that he would do that and he would also face a backlash most likely if he did do something like that. A standard is a standard and should not be altered.
