Encoding failed: Could not close the file (D:\........)

Hi gang,

Sometimes when i'm encoding a movie using cce it stops on the end of a paas ( using VBR with mulipass ) and gives the following error message:

fexp_close() failed: *** Could not close the file <d:\vid\movie.mpv> ***
[Windows error code: 0x6 6]

Does anyone know what I can do about it??

Well, I installed the CRC patch and never had the problem again.

I have that problem too, but only when converting DivX3.11 avi files frameserved through avisynth.

I'd never really seen this problem, but more recently on my new pc it seems to be coming up quite often. very annoying when you've set a batch conversion going and you wake up to see its paused 5mins after you've gone to sleep

the ones in particular I'm trying is a download I just finished, being each 3 individual cds of The Godfather part 1. I finished encoding cds 1 and 2, both having that error message grrrr. I'm going to attempt cd3 with this option ticked (convert divx3 to div4) ....only thing is I'm pretty sure it has done this message for me on a few films that are pretty new releases so surely werent on divx3. time will tell anyways

By choosing to "convert it to divx4" is this going to cause the process to slow down I take it? or worse still if its converting it twice, am I going to lose any picture quality?

Same problem here. I am running Windows XPSP1, CCE 2.5, and DVD2SVCD 113B2. It seems to happen (so far) only when encoding from avi files.

hiya....I managed to discover some time back why this was happening

the codecs I had basically installed.....were Ace Mega Codecs Pack (v4.31 or higher it didn't matter, for its base set of codecs and tools), and then the updated version of divx and xvid codecs.

after checking the option in dvd2svcd and it "changing the divx3 to a divx4 stream", it was always crashing cce every time.
I then noticed by loading that file in vdub, it had obv changed the fourcc header, it should have been saying that it was now a divx4 file, but however was saying it was a panasonic blahblah codec instead for video...which made no sense.

so basically what was happening, is this particular panasonic codec which was designed for some sort of pro DV capture that was installed was getting in the way of the divx4 codecs, which CCE didn';t know how to handle

So I tried several times, reinstalling ace codecs packs, of diff versions and with customising etc...and sometimes it worked till a cpl of restarts again, then that panasonic codec would get in the damn way again and screw it up

the solution I found (in my cases anyways)

go into c:\windows\system32 (or might have been windows\system)

then browse for a file with a name was something like pvc42.dll or pvcodec.dll or along them lines

if you right click and choose properties on that file beforehand, then you can get version info on that file if you want to be sure. It would say company name Matsushita (that is one of the subsidiarys of panasonic) and basically the rest of the info points to that codec.....its some codec that I've never once had a use for...in the 700+ movies I've converted now....and I think its more for capturing of DV cameras to a specific codec...which in either case...ITS CRAP AND ANNOYING....so delete that dll file (or move it somewhere else as backup if you're wary)

then restart your computer,

from that point....your CCE should take them files in straight away, and since then I've had zero freezes on CCE and none of the fxp close failed messages once

right, for past month or so I've been having no problems since removing the old pdvcodec.dll file which was causing CCE to crash whenever I'd ticked for it to make a divx3 to a divx4 stream.

however.....that was from installing Ace Codecs Pack 4.31 that the pdvcodec.dll appeared from each time in the c:\windows\system32 folder (and had it on several machines without problem now by removing that file).....as to gunnm's problem I wasn't sure why couldn't see it.

This time, I set up a 2nd pc in the house, and I'd installed ace codecs pack 5.09 (or something)....I first checked straight away out of habit for the pdvcodec.dll file and couldnt find it, so thought "aah, they must have removed it", but later, after doing a few regular successful encodes, I had a divx that asked to be converted to divx4 (in order to not get the 'could not close...' message.

CCE threw a hissy fit. So I looked in vdub at the filters used, and this time it was using a different but closely named panasonic Giga DV IO codec or something named similar.

took me a while of frustration and looking, but eventually after lots of trial and error with most of the dll's I finally found the codec that was being guilty this time.

so if you dont have pdvcodec.dll to remove, check for this one, idvcodec.dll and remove it - nothing but a pain in the butt.

and if you're not sure, then load the avi that crashes cce into vdub, press, File | Information.....and see whether that codec used should say mpeg4 or divx etc codec, or if it says some sort of panasonic codec then thats whats causing it
