View Full Version : best settings for mono speech tracks?

hi guys!

i just wanted to ask what settings you use to encode mono audio tracks containing speech only like director's commentary tracks?
i use ogg-media as container format and tried to add a commentary audio track as a gimmick. as for such i believe mono encoding with an extra low bitrate not to sacrifice too much of video and main audio tracks would be best. unfortunately up to now neither using vorbis nor mp3 as formats have i been able to achieve efficient and playable results.
would it be possible to post some hints and clues what setting work best for you?

thanx in advance,

elrood

thx for the link, guru :)
this speex-project looks quite interesting..

however, it is in a very early stage offering sources only and is obviously for now aimed primarily at the unix-sector

i was rather looking for something ready to use

here's what i already tried:
i haven't been able to encode with vorbis at 48 kHz and achieve decent low bitrates, so i tried downsampling to 24 kHz before encoding, which gave me an acceptably small and quite well-sounding file in winamp but did not work when i muxed it into the ogg-container file and tried to play it (sound twice as fast as normal - maybe it would be possible to fix this in the ogg ds-filters, just if tobias comes across  )
mp3 at about 24kbps gave me a slender file, flawlessly playable in winamp again, but left me with a total crash after muxing it into .ogm and trying to play

is there a way to get these commentary audio tracks efficient and working? there must be

you're right. speex isn't mature yet.
but i guess that if someone had made a DSF out of it, you could conisder it as a decent solution.

as for crashes when playbacking ogm stream, you might wanna post a question @ our "new a/v formats" forum :).

touché, done

however, i hope i'm not alone with my problem and someone on this board has already worked it out... ?
