A Direct Show compatible alternate for AVI_IO and VDub that works just as well

Hi,

I've been using Win98 SE with VfW drivers and have been able to use two of the most useful video capture and editing software out there: AVI_IO and VirtualDub.

However, the 4 gig file size restriction is really becoming a problem so I'm considering moving on to Windows 2000 Pro and NTFS with drivers for my ATI card that only support Direct Show.

Has anyone been able to find video capture and editing software equally useful and effective as AVI_IO and VDub that is Direct Show compatible? If so, please list them.

You can get directshow -> vfw wrappers for win2k, which would allow you to continue using virtualdub in w2k. There's info on the official virtualdub site about that. Probably not an ideal solution, as bugs and such will crop up, but better than nothing.
But you can get around the 4gig filesize restriction in virtualdub by setting it to split files every x gb as well.

never tried it, but I think IU_VCR will do it. That might not be the right name of the program, you'll prolly have bettr luck in the capture forum.

Prem 6 is DirectShow, apart from that there isnt much in the way of directshow compatible free apps, tmpeg maybe, and the next ver of vdub.

vdub and avi_io work like charme in win2k. The built-in vfw-wrapper is working good.

No need to look for other programs - stick with vdub_sync and be happy :)

btw., there is no real 4GB barrier when you use those programs, just go for multisegment capture - even if I'm using win2k I have my data-partition as FAT32 to be accessable by all OSes.

I read that the wrapper you mentioned was limited to captures at a resolution of 320x240 and could not capture audio simultaneously. Are these limitations in fact true?

The 4 gig limit I'm running into under Win98 and Fat32 has to do with DVD authoring. You have to create a single, DVD compliant MPEG2 file first before burning it to a DVD (or saving it as an image file as MovieFactory allows you to do). Since a DVD holds 4.7 gigs of data, you can't take advantage of the DVD's full capacity under Fat32 since that single MPEG2 file can't exceed 4 gigs.

When I switched to win2k recently, I was disappointed at first because VDub told me the Wintv wdm drivers were only capable to capture at half resolution. But then it showed I can set them to about any resolution I want with the "custom format" settings.
Now, full-size capture works like a charm - it has never been that flawless with VFW drivers in Win98!

Audio also works perfectly, I can't complain.

The only "problem" is that every other capture program than VDub does not have a custom format setting and will only work with half resolution, but do I care? ;)

Is this wrapper automatically installed with Windows2000 or is it a separate file/application that has to be installed manually after the Windows install?

Also, will VDub automatically detect the wrapper or does it have to be manually configured somehow?

I don't know about the ATI card, but with the Wintv (BT878 chipset) card I just installed the newest wdm drivers, and it worked.
