Get me up to date: What's the best Ripper/Encoder toolset? Is Fairuse still best? :)

I've been using fairuse for a long, long time now.

Has anyone found something as good and as efficient as fairuse? I love how you can utilize layers and set your output file to come out to what you'd like. Fairuse is great but I'm starting to become critical about it's encoding quality. I know it could be better, especially since it's an older beta.

Has anyone found something better than fairuse? and if at all possible, can I view your rip?

Well, Fair Use is DivX 3, right?

Doom9 has guides for both Gknot and Nandub. These days, Gknot is DivX 3 and 5.

No, I'm saying I'm looking to use the divx 5 codec but I can't find a good program like fairuse to encode it. I'd imagine 10 layers of divx 3 would produce awesome picture quality, but frankly it doesn't. It's pretty good, but I'd love to see what it'd be like using divx 5 and doing a 10-layer rip&encode

Time to look through Doom9's DivX 5 guides. He lists two: Gknot, and Virtual Dub if you need to set more detailed encoding options.

"Layers" are not applicable to DivX 5. I'm not even sure what that means. DivX allows single pass encodings by bitrate or quality; or 2-pass encodings by bitrate -- this latter allows for what is effectively a variable bitrate encoding.

Oh, yes, there's another encoding tool called vidomi; I saw mention of it earlier this week here in Doom9's forum.

Your wasting your time right now. So far IMHO nothing beats Nandub or Fairuse in quality. If you know how to use Nandub you dont need Gknot, nothing bad about Gknot just most people dont need it.

I'm sure your keeping your eye on XviD right? (it seems to be the best bet to replace Nandub or Fairuse)
There's also DivX5 but I dont like it and have never liked DivXNetworks codecs!
And god forbid.... there is this Corona the new Micro$oft WMV9 codec coming out.
