Problem with stuttering divx playback in XP

For some strange reason, I'm having problems playing back divx files (all codecs) in Windows XP. The file will play and then have a quick "stutter" about every minute or so. It acts like it's trying to catch up or something.

The thing that really throws me off is, I took another HD and loaded Win 98 on it (same system, just different HD) and the playback issues are gone.

I've tried Win2k as well, same stuttering playback problem. I have gone in and shutdown all non essential "services" and have lowered the video "hardware acceleration" with no success.

System specs:

Intel 1.7G P4
Intel 815E MB from Gateway
Seagate 10.2G HD (OS/programs) NTFS
IBM 60G HD (Storage) 10G Fat32 rest NTFS
768MB of PC 2100 memory
SB pci 16 soundcard
Intel 10/100 nic
ATI TV Wonder (using the latest BT8xx Drivers)
ATI Radeon VE (AGP) w/tv out

I would appreciate any help that could be given.

What program are you using to play your files? I use global divx, it seems to give the best quality.

I've tried both Bsplay and Zoom, havent tried Global yet, I'll look into that.

gdivx gives the same stuttering playback...

It seems, your sound card is not properly working with Windows XP.
I have a YAMAHA YMF740C which hasn't XP support. As I installed XP, it used some general purpose driver, which wasn't 100% compatible with my card.
I had the same problems as you.

I think, changing the sound card will solve your problem.

open zoom player
goto the divx codec options
turn the quality to 0....i suspect it is set
to 3 at the moment!

stutter should be fixed (divx4 installed with a setting of 0
but divx5 seems to install with a setting of 3.....)

It seems it actually was the sound card. I removed the sound blaster pci 16,enabled the onboard sound and everything is just fine.
