M2V video plays file - VOB is choppy - help?

the original file plays fine but when it is encoded into a vob using scenearist it gets choppy. what could be the problem? please help.

Check your GOP structure. If the GOPs are screwed up (by missing some of the headers), you will get choppy .VOBs (even though they are fine as a .M2V). This happened to me when I used a MPEG2 cutter program. It changed this:
IBBPBBPBBPBB
IBBPBBPBBPBB
IBBPBBPBBPBB
Into this:
IBBPBBPBBPBBIBBPBBPBBPBB
IBBPBBPBBPBB

Since this is incorrect, there is no way for the authoring program to get the .VOB correct (and I tried everything... finally ended up doing a re-encode, and TRASHING that MPEG2 cutting piece of shit).

thanks man but i just realized that the play fine in ATI File Player and play choppy only in power DVD... thats very odd considering power dvd is made to play dvds but i'll check the GOP too thanks.

Sorry that this is such a delayed reply, but may I ask what MPEG2 cutter you were using? We're using MyFlix XE over at work for splicing MPEG2s, so it'd be helpful to know if that's the software that you had problems with...

i wasnt splicing i was converting from avi to mpg

that is probably dependant on which mpeg-2 codecs are being used for playback (and whether the powerdvd codecs have hardware enabled)

ATI File player will use the same codecs that media player (mplayer2.exe) will use, so open it up in there, right click properties, advanced, and it should list Ravisient video and audio decoders (powerdvd uses cyberlink).

the ravisient codecs will automatically use DXVA/VMR, the powerdvd player defaults randomly (well, aparently) on install, just make sure its enabled.
