Hi, after doing many back-up's successfuly using DVD2AVI,VAFPI,CCE,Maestro, I've started running into trouble which I think is because I need to perform IVTC. My question is how do I know when to perform it? I've read the guides and know how to do it but,
can't seem to find any straightfoward answers explaining when to perform it.

Download VirtualDub and step through the video frame by frame. If every 5th frame is interlaced, then you need to perform IVTC. In fact, if you're reauthoring something that comes up as pure NTSC in DVD2AVI, chances are you're going to have to. Any NTSC extras I've re-authored have required me to do this. Do a search for my username and "decomb.dll" and you'll see the settings I used.

Trilight, thanks for the reply. I now understand interlaced. but what about when DVD2AVI shows the video type as NTSC then changes to FILM XX% or changes to just FILM, I've seen all three in the same movie, then how do you know when to perform IVTC, also I've noticed that the movies I've had trouble with show the display aspect ratio in DVD2AVI as 4:3, even though the movies are 16:9.

As long as it's above around 95%, you can use the "Force Film" option in DVD2AVI. As for your problem with statistics reporting 4:3 and you say it's 16:9, it's probably some "made for TV", "presented in widescreen" BS. It's actually a 4:3 image that is stored on the disc with the black bars as part of the image. A TRUE 16:9 format will definitely show up as such.
There is some GREAT information on what I am talking about if you read some of this site. (http://www.gregl.net/videophile/anamorphic.htm)
