hi Guys, i have one little Question...

I made a DVD Rip yesterday, and i first time used the sharpen filter sharpen 0.4...

Normally i got Speed 1.2-1.3, but with that filter is just got 0.6-0.7

also i changed the image quality from 17, to 24...

i have a T-Bird 1.4, 256 DDR Ram, and a 80GB HD...

So could u explain me the change of speed???

hi
simply its the sharpen filter which kills the speed..

but i like what it does so i can tolerate the extra-time...

ps:maybe this belongs more to the basic topics:)

I don't get as much a dropoff as you do, but I do get a drop off in speed of about 1/3. So I will get about .8 or so when I use Sharpen.
I would rather use it and take the speed hit then not.
Pretty much every filter you add will give you some kind of performance hit. Some are much better then others. For instance the Tweak filter(for adjusting brightness, color, etc...) has almost no hit, while TS has a very good sized hit.

Markrb or Orbit-r - does the sharpen filter have the same effect as the Contrast filter on the DVD2AVI tab? looks like it's doing the same kind of thing

I had the same problem last night. I read a post on someone's optimized dvd2svcd setup and tried sharpen. Went from .75 down to .38.:sly:

hi
@holomatrix: do you mean the luminace settings in thedvd2avi tab?
as far as i know this is for the tuning the brightnes of the picture and not for sharpness.the sharpen filter sharpens(like the name said :p ) the movie ...so you can not get the same result with the luminace option in dvd2avi..

Basically no, what sharpen does is makes the picture sharper if you noticed when u do a conversion without the sharpen your picture will be a bit blurry compared to a dvd. Well if you use sharpen it should look more like the dvd sharp:). Luminace settings in dvd2svcd are totally preference as markrb and i have the same setup we both use around the same settings right now i know marks doing some testing and i should be doing some in the next week. Orbi-r i'm sure your up for some testing right HEHE :)?

chainsaw im going to test...
but first i`ve have to design a little "trailer":D which i want to add to my svcd`s...than i do some doubel-tests ...

i never tried the change the luminace settings in dvd2svcd yet,but in my old divx days ...

btw.:as far as i can see im happy with luminace of my movies but sometimes a little dark...

heres a little german link where you can see the difference of the both luminace settings in cce:http://www.uni-kassel.de/~eckhardm/hq.htm

edit:on the left site of the site click on luminance...there are diagramms..

orbit-r you lucky man, only sometimes your movies are dark hehe mine are always dark because of the player:( thats the main thing I didn't like about the apex 5131, and the fact it's a bit noisy when the tray switches disks. BTW nice link:)

Nice link.
Yes, I'm talking about the settings on the DVD2AVI tab. In the new version it says Lum gain (Contrast) and Lum offset (Brightness).
But they don't seem to do much. I did a chapter with Lum gain at 0 and then again at 15 and did not notice any difference.
So if I'm going to use sharpen is it true to up the CCE anti noise filter? because I read on another thread that, that defeats the purpose because anti noise blures the image again, so I sharpen then blur which if I just left off anti noise and sharpen I would get the same results? I'll do some tests.

@holomatrix try this setting "Lum. Gain=13" "Lum. Offset=20" those settings i can tell a difference on my apex player.

Ok thanks, I have an APEX 500. but do I still need to do sharpen and increase anti noise? I was just trying to stay away from sharpen because it basically kills the encode time to double. (normally from 1.06 to .56)

I don't think that Sharpen has anything to do with the Contrast or Brightness. I use it to reduce the Haze/Fuzzyness that encoding does.

i do not notice this haze? does it show up on your pc and tv? maybe i do not know what to look for. or im blind :P

@Siliconsoul Its a haze that you'll see on the tv...compare the orignal dvd with your backup copy and you might see what were talking about. With sharpen it makes the pic more sharp more sheen i'd say. Now for brightness or contrast i haven't seen it do anything to that...so i use the settings in dvd2svcd lum:gain lum:offset and that helps with the brightness.

My lum settings are,

Lum Gain(Contrast)=13

Lum Offset(Brightness)=20
