Hi,
I thought of doing a Multipass VBR (3 Passes) for my exisiting NTSC DV AVI file using CCE 2.64. I tried to do the 3 passes straight without going for a 1 pass first to save time.
When I watch the Transcoding process, the file size seems to grow but it creates a output file as filename.vaf which is just 2MB size and not any .mpv file. Why?
I tried to browse for the created .vaf file and pressed Encode..but Cinemacraft quits the next second. Why?
I'm confused here. I searched all drives and folders on my machine but couldn't find any .mpv file.
Any clues would be appreciated.
Thanks.

The first pass CCE makes through a multipass VBR encoding session yields only a .VAF file, which it will use to set the bitrates of the main encode. Since a VBR encode has to have some information of both past and future video, CCE uses the info in the .VAF for this. Once the .VAF is completed, THEN CCE will begin encoding the main .M2V file. It will do this the number of passes that you selected. Each time it makes a pass, CCE will refine the .VAF file, so if you decide to change the bitrate on the file after it is done, this can be done in one pass, because all the needed info in still in this file.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
But I'm still confused.
CASE 1:
In the One-Pass VBR mode, CCE infact creates both .mpv file and a .vaf file. Thats fine. After its done, I again change the mode to Mutipass VBR selecting 3 passes with other settings unchanged. When I hit Encode, CCE closes itself the next second, and nothing is happening.
CASE 2:
When I go for a Multipass VBR with 3 passes straight, without going for a One-Pass first, in the Transcoding process window, it seems the Filesize seems to grow up to 123MB for a 5 minute NTSC DV AVI footage but the output filename is shown as filename.vaf and surprisingly, the filesize is just 2MB for the .vaf file. I have no idea why CCE showed me the filesize as 123MB and I infact searched all my drives for the .mpv file but no new file is there.
Any clues on this or what should I do to make it work because, people seem to say on this forum its creating a .mpv file after it finished creating a .vaf file. Even the .pdf file that comes with CCE doesn't seem to be of a clue for me.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

CASE 1:
After doing the 1 pass, when you select multipass VBR, you have to fine tune your settings (you can fine tune the average bit rate, minimum bit rates, max, then click on advanced to really get into the details (see Doom's getting the best out of CCE). If you don't make any changes, then CCE probably thinks that you are not making any further changes to the settings of the encoded file (as recorded in the vaf) and finishes the job.
CASE 2:
I have no idea why this happens. The only way I can see this happen is if you have selected only the VAF file in the Edit window i.e. de-selected the video and the audio file boxes. In other words, you are telling CCE, don't give a video or audio file, just build the vaf for me in the one-pass.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
Fortunately, I created a logfile that has to be set in the Output tab.
Very intersesting...
This is my process:
I used CCE 2.64.
I was succesful in using the One-Pass VBR with Q:20, Min: 0 and Max: 8500. This created a .vaf file and a .mpv file and I changed it to Multipass VBR with 3 passes and hit encode. At this point CCE quit immediately and when I opened the log file, it was writing succesfully until I created a One-Pass VBR .mpv file. But after that, I'm seeing this repeating....!!!!
