This is for those like me who find the time it takes to fix those 'gray bitches' really tiring. Here is where I do this - I have finished my first OnePass VBR and I go to encode again. Edit again, select multi-pass VBR, set average to 2000, min to 0 and max to 9800. Click Advanced and you get the Advanced VBR scene. First thing to do is to set the Bias to 0. Then look at the Average Q factor (right side bottom). Change the global bit rate till the average Q factor gets to below ~9.7, preferably close to 9. At this point there are only a few 'grey bitches' that need to be fixed. This is much faster - it does increase the file size a little but the trade-off on time to do this is significant. I can usualyy still get 2 movies on one DVD-R. Getting 3 will require a lot of time and a lot of grey color fixing - it took me almost 1.5 hours to fix all the grey stuff with the average bit rate set to 2000.

Fair comment, I guess there's always more than one way to skin a rabbit. I see nothing wrong with your method at all, if it works for you.

how would this apply in the SVCD scenario, should one strive for the same Q factor here as well??

how about making q factor 9 and adding more passes
leaving it on overnight is cool, cause it makes me feel like i'm not wasting my cpu (fucking stupid statement)

Wouldn't know about SVCD since I don't do that, only DVD, but I think the same logic (and Q factor) would apply. Any SVCD gurus want to comment?

If you want to keep the file size down as much as possible without wasting too much time, you can set the global bit rate, while watching the average Q factor, then use the slider to scan the movie quickly to see how many grey areas are present. Too many, increase the global bit rate, too few, decrease. The right one is the balance between the time you want to spend fixing the grey areas and your space issues.

Once I have determined my target global bit rate, I usually cancel all the way back to the main CCE window (don't want to risk the issue of going back in the timeline) then go in again and use the target bit rate directly, fix the grey 'bitches' and let it encode, usually one-pass is good enough for me, if I am doing it overnight, then 2-3 passes, I think there is marginal quality improvement but if the PC is chugging away while I am sleeping, why not??

This may have been discussed somewhere before, but it dosen't hurt to mention it again here...

If you already know your target filesize, you can do a '1 step' encode. Add your AVI file, compute and enter the average bitrate that will produce your desired file size, select Multpass VBR, set your # of passes, set your video/GOP/quality options, and click encode.

CCE will then do the # of passes you specified + 1 (1st pass produces the .vaf file). So all you have to do is set it up, click encode, and then let your computer crunch...that's it.

Of course if you're trying to fit 4 hours of video on a DVD, this probably won't work very well. But if you only have 2 or 3 hours, it is VERY hard to tell the difference between a 1 click encode and one that you've spent an hour getting rid of all the grey areas.

If you're like me (lazy), then this a great way to save some effort...
