Hi,

I did a little bit of CPU/System comparison. Just my 2 cents (Europeans now can say that, too - due to the EURO :) ).

The most interesting thing is, that during XVID encoding the Tualatin Celeron 1300 is almost as slow as the PIII 933!

Here's the comparison (I know it's far from comprehensive and as you can't run an Athlon on a Slot1 Board I compare older hardware to newer parts, but still I find it interesting):

The test was run on an Asus P3BF, 512 MB SDRAM PC133, 2x Fujitsu MPG3307AH 30GB harddisks running in Ultra DMA 33 due to MB, WinXP Home Edition updates till June 16th 2002; Athlon setup, scroll further down.

Tested clips:

1x 5 min. MPEG1 Audio layer2 384 kbps, 48kHz converted to MP3-audio 128kbps ABR, WinLame rc1, Quality 0, 48 kHz, joint-stereo, lowpass 19800, priority normal.

1x 5 min. MPEG1 Audio layer2 384 kbps, 48kHz converted to MP3-audio 128kbps CBR, Easy CD-DA Extractor's "File Converter" v4.7.2, preset "128 kbp/s (High Quality)"

1x 5 min.(7500 frames) MPEG2 video 704x576 converted to XVID ( Koepis Build May 22nd 2002) using VirtualDub (1.4.10), 2 Pass fast recompress, normal priority with a *.avs script from Gordian Knot 0.23, motion search 6, Quant type H.263, max/min I-Frame 300/10, Quant restriction I-Frame 2-4/P-Frame 2-10, Alt CC (medium/High 150/Lo 50), other AltCC settings are standard automatic, no credits, output resolution 576x432 GKnot calculated bitrate is 999, smart DeInterlacing and neutral Bicubic-resize were used due to the interlaced source.

PIII 933

WinLame 87 sec.

File Converter 62 sec.

XVID (CPU optimization outo detect)
1st pass 14:04 min. = 8,89 fps
2nd pass 14:01 min. = 8,92 fps

Celeron 1300
Tualatin Socket 370 (with Topgrade Slot1 VRM adapter):

WinLame 61 sec.

File Converter 45 sec.

XVID (Optimization Force MMX, ISSE, SSE)
1st pass 13:47 min. = 9,07 fps
2nd pass 13:37 min. = 9,18 fps

Athlon XP 2000+
(on a Gigabyte GA-7DXR, 256 MB PC 2100 DDR-RAM, TNT2 graphics, RAID0 using 2 Western Digital WD 400 40 GB harddiscs Ultra DMA 100 and Win98SE):

WinLame 51 sec.

File Converter 30 sec.

XVID (CPU optimization auto detect)
1st pass 7:18 min. = 17,12 fps
2nd pass 7:16 min. = 17,20 fps

But - does anybody really need this?

I guess not really, still it was fun to do (although it shows that I was an idiot buying a Celeron 1300)

Cheers

Frank
