View Full Version : Problem when I try to burn to DVD-R

16th June 2002, 01:54
I'm trying to backup a DVD-9 to a DVD-R (5). I've read Doom's guides for this but since Apple bought Spruce Technologies it is impossible to get DVD Maestro anywhere and it is the only way I could use 2 audio tracks and 2 selectable subtitles. ReMpeg2's quality is abysmal compared to CCE and to all intents and purposes it's useless.

I know that using DVD2SVCD for this will make a hybrid DVD/XSVCD that may not play in my DVD reader but I had to try. However I'm consistently getting a I/O error after muxing and cutting. Here is the log:

I/O error 87
////////////////////

I used the following options:
--No title picture, no change cd picture, use VCDXBuild, include movie info, include XML and use PBC.
--On this test I disabled subtitles.
--On the bbMPEG options I used a movie offset of 1 sec and on the advanced settings I used first SVCD program stream type and in the last test a DVD program stream type. All other advanced settings untouched.
--DVD2AVI all defaults.
--Selected 2 audio tracks with Auto detect Azid gain enabled and track 1 at 224 kb and track 2 at 192 kb. No audio downsample selected.
--Frameserver: unchecked Add Resample Audio, Simple Resize, Resize to DVD (full size) and both Sharpen and TS deselected.
--Bitrate: Max. 9000, Min. 300, MinAv unchecked, Max. Avg. 6000. Movie duration was approx. 132 min and I set the Between 125 to 163 min line to a CD size of 4495 (bitrate: 4503-3353).
--Encoder: since I'm testing only I used CCE 2.5 with CBR, create vaf file, IQ 17, anti noise 3, field order auto and in the advanced settings: linear, zig zag, DVD compliant and progressive, all enabled; intra DC: 10, GOP M=3, M/N=5, SEQ=1; I left unchecked the Restrict auto and Close GOPs.
--Pulldown: default.

I've tried twice with different computers and OS's (W2K and WXP Pro with an NTFS formatted partition to allow +4GB files) one with the SVCD program stream type and the last test with DVD program stream type. Both times the file bbMPEG_Muxed_File00.mpg was created (4,584,699 and 4,585,221 KB size). The file seems to be OK and runs to the last credits in the film, however the I/O prevents the DVD image from being created. I used the recover option and changed to VCDImager with the same result. Do VCDXBuild or VCDImager support such large files?

I'm going to try directly with the .mpg file and Nero, Gear, etc. and see what I can get. In the mean time does anybody has any suggestions? Ideas?

Download the new Beta version in the "dvd2svcd advanced" forum. IO error 87 is fixed in that version.

Thanks. The new version solves the I/O error 87, however there is some problem in the image creation because both VCDXBuild and VCDImager make only a 387 MB image instead of a +4 GB one.

First I simply replaced DVD2SVCD.EXE with the new version and used the Recover option. After the usual warning that versions didn't match the process completed but with the creation of only a 406,559,664 bytes .bin file (the image mounted and played OK with DT). Since my last test was with VCDImager this image was also created with VCDImager. I then used recover again and changed to VCDXBuild with the same results, the image was the same size but this time DT refused to mount the image with the error: "Unable to mount image. Cue sheet: line 14 - INDEX times are not in ascending order". I include the cue sheet:

I then changed folders and restarted from the beginning with VCDXBuild selected. I get very similar results: the image size is only 406,553,792 bytes and the cue sheet is exactly the same. I'm including the latest log file:

Hi Fgm,

I use DVD2SVCD to re-encode DVD9 to DVD5 all the time (Movie only).. I was wondering why you are downsampling the audio and using CBR ? If you disable image creation you have the option to retain the AC3 audio ... After encoding, you will be left with an M2v file and an AC3 that you simply need to import into your preferred DVD authoring software...

Note: Unless you are running NTFS file system, you will have an error when DVD2SVCD trys to create a muxed mpg file larger than 4 gig... At least I do... Don't worry about this error, you will still have the most important elements you need anyway (M2v & AC3 files).

Cheers

Fletch

Thanks fletch.

The reason I was using CBR was simply for speed. I'm only doing some tests so I thought I could save some time until I get the hang of things.

The reason I used mp2 audio instead of AC3 is dual: first I wanted the speed and convenience that DVD2SVCD provides (mp2 audio is good enough for me) and secondly because I need two audio tracks and two subtitle streams. Two AC3 audio streams use a lot of space (aprox +500 MB each) and that reduces video quality (mp2 audio takes less than half that much).

Now, since I need/want two audio tracks and two subtitle streams you have very little choice but to use DVD Maestro as authoring tool. Since Apple bought Spruce it seems that Maestro has had an untimely death and is all but impossible to get (I'm still trying though!).

Finaly, yes, I use both W2K and WXP with NTFS partitons and bbmpeg creates an bbmpeg_Muxed_File00.mpg that plays OK with PowerDVD. However neither VCDXBuild nor VCDimager want to create a +4GB image. Go figure.
