I'm buying the boxes of star trek TNG, but reaally would like to save them from wear and tear, so i'm thinking of making backups, what i need is some adwince on the format ans tools to use. I want to do real good backups, but dont know if divx og mepg is the way to go, could anyone help me out in getting the best quality possible, and what tools to get it with, i need the 42 min per episode to fit on 1 700 min cd if possible.

Hi there,
i would suggest either making a divx or svcd ... divx is the highest quality imho but svcd has the ability to play on ur dvd player ( ... well, actually there is not 100% compatibility with standalone dvd players and svcd - you'll have to find that out by checking the compatibility list at www.vcdhelp.com or trying out urself, but anyways ). ogm ( ogg media stream file ) is a container format for video and audio streams, like avi is, that offers advantages over normal avi files - one of them being the ability to use ogg vorbis audio which is superior to mp3 in terms of compression/sound quality and is recommended ( by me ;) ) unless u choose ac3 sound of course.
i think it's generally agreed that gordian knot offers the best balance of user friendliness and high quality results for producing divx. ur going to have to decide in between divx 3.11 alpha, xvid and divx 5 as your codecs. i recommend u try all of them out on the same episode and see what u think. my preference is almost always 3.11, but i think the best thing to do is ignore what everyone else says regarding codecs and see for yourself. the guides may seem a little overwhelming at first, but after a few rips you'll find it very easy i imagine. 42 minutes will quite easily fit onto 1 cd and quite possibly will not fill the entire cd at maximum divx quality - i'd be more inclined to put 2 episodes per cd if i was you. mind you, i have not ripped tng, so maybe i am wrong on that part.
svcd is not my speciality at all but dvd2svcd seems to be the app to use in that case.

It is probably just ripping one episode off the discs and the other two or three episodes left have to be ripped seperately.

PS. With Divx or Xvid you will defintely be able to put an episode on one cd. It would be pretty easy to put to two on a cd (which is what I did).

hi and welcome to the forum!
@DaVinci: i personally would go for two episodes per disk using divx 5.05 and mp3/ogg vorbis sound, but if you just want to put one episode per cd, this is of course perfectly ok too and in that case you'll surely be able to keep the ac3 sound retaining 100% of the audio quality :)
for the tools to use> i'd suggest you give gordianknot a try. you can find very comprehensive guides on www.doom9.org. you can use it with both divx and xvid and also have the choice between ac3 or mp3 sound. even putting two audio tracks (english + another language or commentary) is no problem!
@Beckz636: you're problem is related with the ripping method DVD2SVCD uses. it just chooses the first (or longest) PGC (episode) and takes this one as it is accustomed to just choosing the 'main movie' and leaving out all the extras.
iirc this can only be solved by some manual interaction. personally i would just go, rip each episode manually and then feed the resulting files to DVD2SVCD putting one episode per SVCD.
anyway, i haven't used DVD2SVCD for ages, so i might just not be fully informed. therefore i suggest you take a closer look at the DVD2SVCD basics forum (maybe also search the advanced) and if you do not find any information there (which i highly doubt as this problem MUSt have arisen before) post your problem there again :)
