maybe some of you know that speaking in native language is much more easier than in a foreign language... therefore I have this question I can only discribe in german because it is very hard to explain it for you... I don't get it quite well in german as well ;) . Maybe some of you are willing to answer my questions posted in german... if not, just delete this thread...

here it comes:

hi,

nicht gleich losschreien bitte... Grunlagen sind vorhanden. Also hier mal die Frage(n).

P.S. I have posted these questions on a german board too (PowerDivX-Forum), but there is not very much traffic and for another reason I don't like crossposting...

thx in advance

Also lieber nur CBR benutzen.

And now for everybody who wants to follow our discussion:
sillKotscha wanted to know why you don't get a .xvid or .divx file if you encode to XviD/DivX. I told him that the native mpeg container ( .mp4 ) isn't supported too well at the moment ( even though there's more and more software coming for it ) so that it's easier to use .avi files as container.

He also wanted to know if you can use .mp3 files in the .avi container. Answer: Yes but you may get problems with VBR ( = ABR ) files.

He wanted to know if you can use Vorbis in .avi files: No, because of it's VBR.

Also he got confused with muxing .avi and .ogg files to .ogm. He thought that you would mux the WHOLE .ogg file into the .ogm file with all it's headers. I told him that only the vorbis stream is muxed into the .ogm file and that you still have only one container and that you don't have one container inside another one.

thank you, very clear explained for me... but

hm, this wasn't really my question, as after many encodings I knew that ;) It was just the question why vorbis can't be integrated in avi-container... but that you explained well.

only the vorbis stream, but with ogg extension!!, that was why I get a bit confused... vorbis into ogg container
--> with video into ogm container, right?!

I told him that only the vorbis stream is muxed into the .ogm file and that you still have only one container and that you don't have one container inside another one.

only the vorbis stream into ogm?? hmm, but with video headers in it, otherwise you would still have only ogg extension as you explained, because 'ogg' is only for audio (vorbis) and 'ogm' for audio AND video. There you are... as I thougt a container into a container...

ogg for vorbis and ogm for ogg-vorbis plus video (to handle video with vbr-vorbis)...

correct me if I'm still wrong

cheers sill

.ogg wasn't invented for audio ( Vorbis ) only. Xiph ( the developer ) is also working on Ogg Tarkin a video codec. It will also use the same container as Vorbis -> Ogg.

Ogg is a container that contains headers for the different streams it contains. It wasn't invented only for Vorbis but for different kinds of multimedia data. For the exact difference between an audio only .ogg file and an .ogg file with video ( = .ogm ) we have to ask Tobias, the author of the Ogg DirectShow Filter. But I think the basic structure and the basic bitstream is the same for both .ogg and .ogm. When Tobias released his filters for the first time every beta tester ( only very few people actually used his filters :) ) used the .ogg extension since we actually used the Ogg container. The new name was just given to Ogg files with a video stream in them so that Windows users have less problems. ( e.g. play .ogm with Windows Media Player and play .ogg with WinAmp so that WinAmp doesn't try to open .ogg files with a video stream ;) )
