I tried following doom9's guide for AC3 to AAC (5.1 to 5.1); everything appears to go ok, but there is no output file, and the log file reports an average bitrate of over 1500 kbps (I was using normal VBR preset)!

Here is the contents of the log file generated be Besweet:

DSPguru

the average bitrate relates to BeSweet.tmp that should be delivered to aacenc.exe .
did it run aacenc ?
if yes, try this workaround version :

did it work for you ?

The Belgain

It didn't make any difference.

The only thing which was run was besweet (1.4b5).

aacenc didn't show up in task manager either.

did you set the path of aacenc.exe ?
can you show us a snapshot of your AACMachine screen ?

The Belgain
15th June 2002, 00:19
Yup, I did set the path of aacenc.exe correctly. I can't really figure out what's gone wrong; it's almost certainly something REALLY stupid. Does aacenc need to be installed/registered at all, or does it just need that single file?

What kind of bitrates should I be getting for 5.1 at normal setting?

Anyway, I've attached a screenshot af AACMachine, hope it helps.

DSPguru

mayB aacenc have a problem with the long output filename...

The Belgain
16th June 2002, 19:24
I tried renaming the file to something less than 8 letters long, but it didn't help.

I am also having the same problem. I went to the psytel site and according to them, the maximum supported bitrate is 512 kb/s. I don't know if this refers to input or output, but it could be the answer.

netnichols
21st June 2002, 09:56
I've experienced similar results, but I was able to trace my problem (I think..) down to file size. It seems that aacenc simply cannot handle files over a certain size at this moment. I'm not sure if this is your problem, but it's worth taking a look at.

Also, you might want to take a look at this thread from over at everwicked..

This question has pobably been asked before, but after four hours of searching different terms I could not find it.

I found that the mpegable player is the first MPEG4 player that is able to play my divx5-mp4 files full screen without error, stutter, or any other problem I encountered with RealOne, Quicktime 6 and MP4 Player.

Now I need to insert sound. 2 Channels work fine, but I want 5.1 channels in my AAC. It used to work once, when I was testing Nic's Beta DirectShow filter, but now I cannot get the Psytel encoder to accept any file.

I tried with the latest versions of BeSweet and HeadAC3he to get my AC3 files to multichannel WAV's, but Psytel keeps giving me the same thing:

ERROR[-1]: EncodeInit() Error!

I hope anyone can tell me how to get 'proper' multichannel WAV's that Psytel will be able to encode. I'd simple love to make the jump to MP4 in all my future projects.

DSPguru

try spliting your source ac3 file to something like 10 slices (with BeSplit) and then encode all files to AAC (with AACMachine, for instance), and then join all products (with BeSweet, for instance).

and don't forget to post all your logfiles and conclusions..

Orionos
10th July 2002, 10:42
It seems to work. Psytel accepts the smaller files. Anyone know the maximum size it will accept?

And... How do I join AAC files with BeSweet? Forgive my ignorance, but I thought BeSweet wouldn't even recognize it as an audio file

Thanks, DSPGuru, for the help.

DSPguru

using listfile, read q7 here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7633).

Orionos
10th July 2002, 20:32
Okay, this is what I'm gonna do:

1) Split the AC3-file into pieces of 10 minutes
-- Done, resulting in 13 files

2) Run BeSweet with Auto Gain on the original file, in order to find the gain value that is valid for the complete file
-- Done, in this case 9.3db

3) Encode the 13 files into 6 channel - AAC's
-- Busy, let's hope Psytel doesn't do a random crash on me this time. 13 ain't exactly the lucky number

-- Work interrupted. I tried to combine two files first. BeSweet won't continue until he finds "borlndmm.dll"
Don't tell me I need to dig up a borland compiler for this file.
-- Merging them with copy seems to have the desired effect...

4) Join the AAC files, using the above mentioned list method and BeSweet

5) Join the 'mended' AAC file with the existing MP4 file.

6) See if all my trouble goes down the drain. Test the final video.

I'll be editing this post after I complete each step.

Okay, I downloaded AACMachine 0.41

I just started the process, I'll see what happens.

BTW, the previous method (the merging was done with the copy - command) resulted in no sound, and accelerated video. Let's see what happens this way.

UPDATE : I just realized that the video I used to make an MP4 from has B-frames. That means that mpegable plays B-frames perfectly...

UPDATE : I see some screens flashing. I don't think he runs BeSplit. Besweet does merge the files, but since they aren't there, it results in a 0-byte AAC.

Question : I cannot see the commandline for BeSplit. What does it split into? Blocks of 10 or 20 minutes?

Suggestion : If this is going to work, resulting in perfect MP4 files, I suggest you insert the VOBInput into the BeSweet package, since AACMachine is going to need it a lot.

the process should be :
BeSweet to decode to wave
BeSplit to split to smaller waves
AACEnc to encode those smaller waves
BeSweet to join to one AAC

it seems like BeSplit didn't run, neither do AACenc, so BeSweet couldn't join anything at the end.

please "copy command to clipboard" and paste.

dear Orionos,
i'm sorry, but i can't work like this .
if you want us to work together on tuning AacMachine to synchronize the three tools, you have to supply maximum information and supply meaningfull feebacks.

have you set the right path for BeSplit ?

anyway, check out AacMachine v0.43, it now splits the AC3 file instead of the WAVEs.
you'd also need BeSweet v1.4b15.

I tried it with splitting the AC3 manually before. It works. I'll do it using AACMachine now.

I think it's a matter of size. A 4.5GB WAV file is just too big, for Psytel and BeSplit. Smaller files work perfectly.

I'll post the log when It's done.

You took the Copy Commandline away, just for me? :D

Make "Apeend Silence" into "Append Silence", whenever you have the time. It's not that important.

Test Three : Completed Succesfully

Now I'm going for the last one. Same file, 6 channels this time. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

It seems to be working. He's encoding part two now.

If I may ask, how is the delay applied? Only to the first AC3?

delay & silence are problematic stuff. this will f*ck up all the continuity of the splitting and then merging.
the 32secs that i picked as a segment size isn't random, it's based on the lcm of ac3 & aac frame-sizes for common sample-rates (48k,44.1k,32k). slightly change this and you'll lose your continuity.

the ota section had been removed in v0.44 .
sorry.
whenever AacEnc is fixed, you could use the ota section with v0.3 .

As I recall, when HeadAC3he could not do delays yet, the Doom9 guide had people use a program that rewrote the AC3 file to include the delay. It's still in the download section. Would that work in this case?

I appreciate all the effort you've put into the programming these past three days. I know how hard it can be. ;)

Apart from those spontaneous crashes Psytel has, it seems to work. I'll do the fourth test with the newest versions of the tools (except BeSplit 0.71, you have it in your example log, but it's not available for download), and the mpeg4 optimized version of aacenc.

"AC3 Corrector" can only add AC3 frames. that's usually a resoultion of 32msecs, but that's the best you can get.

DSPguru

while the best you could get with AC3 corrector is 32msec, the best you could get with AAC is about 21msec, so i've re-enabled the delay part in AacMachine v0.45, but you would need BeSweet v1.4RC2.
also added support for dolby surround2.
