I am using DVD-R media and a Vivastar recorder. I have authored discs using DVDit! 2.3 PE and also using the disc wizard in PowerDirector Pro. Both produce discs that play on two computers that I have. But NEITHER play on any of the four standalone DVD machines I have tried them on (all from different manufacurers).

My question is this. I am doing something wrong. Is there some particular DVD format or standard that is more compatible with set top machines over DVD Rom drives? Or is it that the format is just not compatible with most set top machines. I would have understood some anomalies, but not a 100 percent failure on all four manufacturers!!

Can anyone explain the facts on this, or point me to a site with information?

Thanks all.

Dave

When you say authored do you mean doing from scratch or copying a DVD?
Why not give copying a go and see if it works? Then you'll know if it is an inherent problem with your set-up. Have a look and the guides -
www.doom9.org/mpg/ifoedit-basic.htm and see how you get on.
Happy Ripping.

I have authored them using Sonic DVDit! PE 2.3 and Cyberlink PowerDirector Pro. Both cut the discs fine, but only play on DVD Rom players. The DVD-R drive also write data DVD's fine. I have been reading up since I posted my query and it does in fact seem that I'm probably just unlucky enough to have 4 DVD machines that don't play them!! Which tends to make you think the claim that 90 percent of set top boxes will play them as a bit of an optimistic claim!

So, it looks increasingly as if the drive will be returned to the shop and money refunded!

Thanks anyway.

If you go to www.vcdhelp.com (http://www.vcdhelp.com) you can look on the left bar under DVD Players, they have a list of many settop DVD players and their compatibility. Posted my users, but mine was accurate.
