View Full Version : AVI to DVD SAR problem

I converted the LOTR Divx files to a m2v file. In TMPGEnc I set the source aspect ratio to 1:1 and DAR to keep aspect ratio 2. I tried to import into Scenarist and it complains about the SAR being non-dvd compliant. I used Spruceup to author, and played it in PowerDVD, looks great. If I change the SAR to 4:3 the output video looks strange. Can I use DVDPatcher or anything to allow Scenarist to import? I will be converting a bunch of Divx files to DVD so any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Set the SAR to 16:9.
I believe this is what I did when I had the same problem (with the same movie, doing the same thing).

On the video tab set aspect ratio to 16:9 and on the advanced tab set the SAR to 16:9. That should do it if you have the same DIVX that I did.

uhh, so your divx source was a 'letterboxed' widescreen (720x480 w/black bars)? or was it a 'widescreen' (720x405 no black bars)? or was it pan and scan?

depending on what the source is, you'll need tmpgenc to resize the video to 720x576 and then you shouldnt need to specify any aspect ratio other than 4:3 (scen. will force 16:9 on it if need be)

It was the DVL release. The movie was 640x272 w/ no letterbox, and using the settings I posted for TMPGEnc, then authoring with Spruce, then burning with Primo, the DVD is perfect.
So if I set SAR and DAR to 16:9 then I could use Scenarist?

That would probably do it.
The output DAR has to be either set to 4:3 or 16:9 for Scenarist to accept the file. As for the SAR, it should be set to whatever the source footage is. In this case it sounds like it is 16:9.
