Why waste the ammo and risk the neighbors calling the cops if you're within the city limits? :) Plus, you'd be left with pieces to throw away and if you're truly wanting to destroy the data with no hopes of reconstruction, you wouldn't want to throw them away together, or even at the same location. The microwave is a sure-fire, no fuss no muss way of destroying it completely with no waste of ammo, no risk of police involvement, and you can toss the destroyed disc with no worry of any of the data ever being reconstructed! :)
And, yes, I AM paranoid. hehe :D

You can't do this. The recorded data is on a layer embedded in the plastic. There is no way to destroy the disc without there being some type of noticeable physical anomaly. Even if you had a laser capable of pinpointing the data layer, the damage would be noticeable because the disc wouldn't have the same concentric pattern anymore. The best suggestion I could give you would be to write yourself a new firmware for your DVD-RW drive. It would have to trick it into thinking a disc that's already been recorded is a DVD-RW and to write all 0's (effectively burning through the rest of the layer) to the entire disc. Good luck on writing firmware to do that! You'd probably damage your drive in the process too. Not to mention the main question on everyone's mind... WHY BOTHER?? :D
