View Full Version : Software to check dvd specification?

Hi,
I have been having occasional problems with dvds not playing presumably because they don't conform to spec. I tried using primodvd which checks the files against the spec and fails if it doesn't conform. Unfortunately it doesn't tell you what is wrong with the files. Anyone know of any diagnostic software that can actually tell you what is wrong and maybe how to fix it?

Thanks
Glenn

http://www.tecoltd.com/bitratev.htm can tell you a lot of your mpeg 2 stream. Like bitrate, GOP structure, encoding process, field order etc.

I would say check your parameters against those spelled out at:

http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html

If you meet these rules you are compliant. Also be careful if you use the IFOEDIT methods to ensure your IFO doesn't cause the compliance confusion.

Certainly makes an interesting read but doesn't really give me enough info to be able to spot the problem.

Thanks

Can you post ALL your encoding settings for us to view, please? If you are using TMPGEnc, for example, you can simply drop the relevant template into Notepad and then copy and paste it into a forum reply.

For a few general pointers, peruse this thread (hardly exhaustive - in fact, not by a very long shot, but it may list one parameter, perhaps, that you've overlooked):

http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=15033

(I'm afraid some of the embedded links in the above thread are now outdated, but the rest of the info holds true).

And, I know it's silly money, but in the interests of answering your question, well... here's something which would undoubtedly help you, if you could lay your hands on it:

Looks like a cool program - I hate to think what it costs! I can't post any encoding settings because I haven't done any encoding! This is a dvd rip. I have tried demuxing using smartripper and then authoring using spruceup. The other method tried is removing unnecessary vobs from the rip and using get_vts_sectors in ifoedit. I am at a loss to figure out what is wrong. I have used both methods before without problems.
