What can I use to predict file sizes? Gordian knot is not doing it corrrectly, i don't think it is including the resizing into the file size. It predicts 700 megs, but output is 350. I resized to a smaller size, but it didn't compensate. How do I fix this?

if your file is too small, why do you decrease the resolution?
gknot does all the calculations correct, but there are various reasons for an undersized result. but 350mb sounds really small, how long was your movie? maybe you got some settings wrong?

Have you tried doing a compressibility test before encoding the whole movie ?

Well the most commom error for under/over size of the output file is actually the framerate. Always make sure you´re using the right one (the one you got from DVD2AVI).Anyways, I can asure you that Gknot can be very precise on the file calculation so keep your eye open to some settings that you might be missing:sly: ... Take care...

My problem seems to be that on the "resolution" tab, If i resize the output resolution, it is not taken into account. I think the program still thinks I am encoding at 740-480 (minus crop) instead of a smaller resized resolution. Does anyone know how to fix this? your help is greatly appreciated.

I have same prob. I aim for 1.3 gb. I end up with 950 mb for some movies

there was so much written about undersized files...

Hi
I think this is connected somehow with compressibility values (or at least one can use it for orientation). I've encoded a movie (640X272) with 75% from compressibility test for 700MB and had at the end 695 (audio,video,subt.). Increasing the resolution (672X288) the compr.dropped at 71% added 2 MB (697MB). Another resizing filter (Simple resize), compr. - 69%, file - 698MB. In my opinion above 50-60% compressibility one should expect reducing of the file size, really I don't know the proportion. It seems that there is kind of compensation, as the other values (resizing, resolution, bitrate) are necessary for the movie, GKnot make a compensation with the file size tending some how to 50-60% compessibility. Well, just some thoughts...

I don't think there will be a hard rule such as 75% gives 695mb and 80% gives 692mb, etc. Alot of it will depend on the movie being compressed. If you stick to between 50% and 75% gnot should get you very close. IMHO if the final file comes out a little small, even by 25mb then I wouldn't worry about it.

Gknot files stay within 1-2MB of the filesize.

There can be one technical reason for undersized files - but as PeterTheMaster said: there was so much written about it...
