View Full Version : Pitch of audio taken down during rip?

thebigbeef

Hi all

I have been using DVD2SVCD for a few months now with CCE SP 2.5 Encoder

Great results but I have come across a strange occurence.

This has happened to me on a few DVD Silvers and an original R1 release (10th Kingdom box set)

I set everything as normal but when it has finished and I check it out, the audio is still synced up with picture (as it should) but it seems to have been lowered in pitch.

deeper voices etc...

Why is this?

I have tried both with or without downsampling (if that could effect it)

Any ideas?

Like I said it mainly happens with DVD Silvers or just this R1 Original release (so far)

hmmm...don't know exactly.... never been a problem for me....
as long as you chose NOT to delete files, you're always welcome to open your MP2 file, and upsample it till it sounds normal.

Then, you can run a crash recovry from Audio Processing, or Muxing and Cutting, etc... whatever you feel necessary and based on how much extra time you have.

if sound and images are synched as you say, the end result SHOULD be the same, just a better, more correctly sounding movie.

just play around with the sampling until you find a match, then recreate your SVCD...

I recommend using Sonic Foundry's Sound Forge to open/edit the MP2 file.

good luck.

Mike

Where are your logs? In this case we will need the BeSweet log as well.

Right then

Just ripped 1 chapter off the NTSC DVD "10th Kingdom"

As before on this title, the audio's pitch has been taken down but is in perfect sync with the video.

I hope the logs below shed some light on the problem

The reason is because you're doing a NTSC 2 PAL conversion.

thebigbeef
9th June 2002, 19:34
Doing a NTSC to PAL conversion?

I have ripped around 30 or so NTSC dvds to PAL in DVD2SVCD with no problems whatsoever.

Always rip to PAL. results look better to me.

Any other ideas?

I highly doubt it should matter, but I notice you are using:
DVD2SVCD ver. 1.0.8 build 1

....Personally, I'm a stickler for always having the newest release of any program I use...

Try updating to 1.0.9 build 2...

if the end result is the same, listen to dvd2svcd...maybe keep this ONE movie that is giving you problems in NTSC ??

What I meant was, the movie is converted from 29.970 to 25 fps instead of 23.976 to 25 which is the usual ntsc2pal conversion.

You know who I am :)

dvd2svcd - sorry if I sounded arrogant. I see what you're getting at. Will try a ntsc rip of a chapter. Will post here the result.

madmuppet - Have mislayed your email addy. Email me (unless I track it down and email you 1st! lol)

Cheers

This has happened to me before , only when converting NTSC to Pal .
I understand why , but is there any way of coverting and keeping it as it is surpose to be heard.
Thanks in advance , and for this great prog.

I had this problem with a 29.97 NTSC framerate movie.
The movie on the PAL SVCD was about 15% longer than on the NTSC DVD with all the speech slow and eerie. I only used the setting once. Never again, since I mainly encode PAL movies anyway.

I assume with a 23.976 framerate NTSC source, having never come across one, that the video is slightly speeded up but the difference is less significant.

As for 29.97 movies, the process really does not work too well. The only feasible workaround I could imagine for this would be to marginally speed up the whole thing to 30.0fps rate for the video and then only encode 5 frames out of every 6 to reduce the framerate to the 25fps PAL standard.

This loss of data would mean some jerkiness of movement in the video but depending on how severe it would be, it just might be a worthy trade-off for much improved audio. Only problem is I wouldn't have the first clue how to go about testing it !!

On a technical level how difficult would this be and has anyone ever tried it?

I am in over my head here and this might be way out! If so, I look forward to the inevitable ridicule and p-taking!

Quote from dvd2svcdWhat I meant was, the movie is converted from 29.970 to 25 fps instead of 23.976 to 25 which is the usual ntsc2pal conversion.I am for the time being trying to encode such NTSC movie to PAL SVCD, and facing the same issue. Does somebody know a workaround for this ? I would do it just for curiosity because my DVD player plays as well PAL as NTSC, but I guess it would bring nothing in quality (as 29.970 * 480 * 480 ~= 25 * 480 * 576) ? or only marginally because audio is 15 % smaller ?
