hi folks,

I now make my first efforts (or not ;) ) with Xvid. And as it is straight forward with n00bs, I've a question...

First of all I've downloaded '2passXvidEncoder' + 'new patch a few more bugs fixed: http://www.ecs.soton.ac.uk/~del100/quick2pass0.693patch.zip'
and the latest Xvid-Codec (XviD.Alpha.07.06.2002.1500).
Befor using Xvid for encoding, I uninstalled Xvid (the one which came with the '2passXvidEncoder'), had a look if really everything is uninstalled and then installed the latest Xvid again.

And here is my way to go:

- movie: Romeo must Die (very good for testing, lots of slow and fast motion scenes; 1h50m20sec)
- AC3->(vorbis)OGG with HeadAC3he0.23, FileSize: 79000KB @ Quality 2(96kbps)
- DVD2AVI using GKnot (because I couldn't open my *.d2v file in GKnot, when I made a DVD2AVI-Project with DVD2AVI from 2passXvidEncoder!!)
- going for 1CD: Resolution (608x240, 0,213Bits/(Pixel*Frame))
- save as test.avs, with neutralBicubic ResizeFilter, nothing else)
- then openend 2passXvidEncoder: Select Input Type: AvisynthScript
- ...include Audio, Setup Xvid Codec, Credits Treatment
- MotionSearch: 6-UltraHigh
- Quant.Type: H.263
- Use Hinted ME
- Min I-Frame Interval: 6
- Max I-Frame Interval: 250
- I-Frame boost %: 20
- Min I-Frame 2
- Max I-Frame 31

... the final Result wasa 18m:03sec movie, with a filesize of: 93,8MB??!!!

ok, then I tried using VirtualDub: my first Pass was NO Problem, then I started the second Pass: for a few seconds VD started encoding but then crashes!!! I really have NO clue why. I post my Crashlog:

what can I do, because I believe Xvid is the way to go... I saw my 18mins ;) and was very convinced!!!!!

Such software is meant to be used with the codec which it ships with.

By installing another codec version you messed the mechanisms up (changes in the registry between different builds etc).

Try again using the software package - or set it up yourself in vdub if you want the newest codec (which is in no way different from my last build btw., maybe it's compiled with MS VC++ instead of intel compilers, didn't check on that yet).

That version should not a problem (in fact any version in the last 6 weeks according to the cvs logs should all work with my program).

(any chance of getting something added to the xvid dll so i can detect compatible versions (easiest check would probably be to check the size of the config struct in vfw/src/config.h as that is what i need to be the same for it to work and the size is not a a perfect check (eg the vidomi patch would have broken it but in most cases if this struct changes then the size will)).

so it doesnt work with virtualdub either Just in case (my program should not effect the registry anyway) try the "Load Defaults..." button in the codec in virtual dub then try again.

can you send me (dave at leatherdale dot net) or post here the file virtualdub.jobs (if your using the version of virtualdub included in my program will be in the virtualdub folder under the directory you installed to.

ill try to add some logging to my next version to make problems easier to work out.

also check the file test.avs.avi to see what size that is. im not sure if vorbis audio mux only is working correctly in 0.693 (0.6 is the "stable" version still) if thats the problem (however the symptoms dont seem to suggest it is) that file will have the whole film in.

- DVD2AVI using GKnot (because I couldn't open my *.d2v file in GKnot, when I made a DVD2AVI-Project with DVD2AVI from 2passXvidEncoder!!)

hmm weird that version of DVD2AVI is the version from DVD2SVCD i used that one because of the fact i can control it from the command line so i could add support from going right from VOB files to xvid but i will bundle the standard version if its causing problems.

I did 2 more tests with Xvid...

and again, I uninstalled everything... cleard registry etc., and only installed your bundle. Updateted BeSweet with the latest BeSweet version and updatetd OGG-mux with the latest version (0.85). But these changes shouldn't have any influences, I guess. This time I "only" used VD for encoding... done by a joblist, with the exact settings mentioned above. For the first pass everything worked as it should be... with no problem...1pass realtime encoded, then VD started automatically the 2pass. I thougt this time it really works but unfortunately after 12% it crashs again

...then I've rebooted my workstation, started VD again for the 2pass but this time as an outstanding job (no joblist)

it really went further then the first time (using a joblist) but finaly VD crashs again. Before this error occured (see my attachment, hopefully validated) my video rendering rate nearly went to "zero" and then BANG!!

So, I would say it has nothing to do with your 2passXvidEncoder... there must be something else really be strange.

I just wanted to say that ive experienced this aswell.. I wanted to try different Altcc settings so I decided to do som compressions of "6th day" .
I made the first pass, then I was away for a couple of days, and then i tried to do a second pass ... i got the same error. I tried without the mvhints but the same error occured. I also tried with a lower motionprediction setting (not EPSZ) , but the same results.

I have the Intel compiled version from Koepis site, and used Gordian Knot to create the avs , and then virtualdub 1.4.10 to compress..

Unfortunately I cant give you much information, because I thought the vobs must have gotten corrupted and deleted all the files..

I remember using simpleresize filter, and having endcredits with a quantizer of 20, MPEG quantization and of course altCC ...
The error always occured on the same frame ..

Just wanted to say this, so that you know more people had the problem.

hi folks,

I did mess up quite a long time with this problem and the only possible solution was:

- using the *.d2v file instead of
- using *.avs

and everything worked as expected
