Antifreeze in divx5?

It may sound strange, I don't know, but in my last movie I had a problem with famous video freezing (sound is going on of course). Is there some kind of a filter that can help on this? Or any other solution...

That happens a lot, but only when the video can't keep up with the movie because your computer isn't fast enough. Just try the usual tricks to get cpu-load down.

Or may be because of the "Smooth Playback" option.

1) Turn post-processing off
2) Disable Smooth Playback
3) Disable Double Buffering
4) Use the dffshow filter to decode your movie instead of DivX5's native filter
3) (Re)Encode the movie without using GMC
4) (Re)Encode the movie without using Q-Pel
5) (Re)Encode the movie without using Bidirectional Encoding
6) If all else fails: Buy a faster computer :)

the Divx 5.02 decoder filter causes the same problem on my (slow)system (with PAL 720x576 AC3 Divx files)

you can also use the Divx 4.12 divxdec.ax direct show filter for playback (which (on my system)produces a better image quality than ffdshow)

a) uninstall 5.02, install 4.12
b) copy \windows or winnt\system32\divxdec.ax to somewhere
c) uninstall 4.12, install 5.02
d) copy (b) to \windows or winnt\system32
e) done, encode in 5.02 and decode / playback with 4.12

works fine on my Celeron 1 GHz (silent)TV-PC

I use bi-directional encoding and gmc, only 3 last films show this problems :|

I also experienced strange video/audio "interactions" with DivX 5.0.2. It's not a common synch issue, but sometimes (too often) both video and audio jump backwards for the fraction of a second, so this content gets played twice. Although A/V remains synch, this "stuttering effect" is very annoying. It never happened with DivX 5.0, I don't know if it would have occured with 5.0.1. I reinstalled everything from Vdub to DivX but it remained; did a few films. Now I'm back to 5.0. By the way, my pc is fast enough ... Athlon 1300 with 512mb ... etc
Strange things also happen with the "video bitrate window" of Vdub's and Nandub's status window. With 5.0.2 bars of b-frames no longer show any height (of course there are.... checked it in the logs), in contrary to 5.0 where everything worked as usual and where you could well see all the b-frames with their really low height/bitrate.

the stuttering playback / audio out of snyc Divx 5.02 Problem
is "only" caused by the decoder direct show filter divxdec.ax

there's no need to downgrade the divx version for encoding.
so you can use 4.12, 5.00, 5.01 decoding while using 5.02 encoding.

I've Divx Files in 4.12, 5.01, 5.02
with all files i have no problem when decoding with 4.12,
and with all files i have the problem when decoding with 5.02

Maybe the 5.03 divxdec.ax will be better.

I only shortly tested ffdshow and was not so pleased with the image quality (on my system)

you wrote "It never happened with DivX 5.0"
give it a try and copy (5.0) divxdec.ax to \windows\system32.

Maybe i'm wrong concerning your system, but why not test it out.

i tested it: when i delete all installed files except of divxdec.ax
i can still playback but can no longer encode

Decoder configuration is stored in:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\DivXNetworks\DivX4Windows

New (Double Buffering, ...) Parameters (unknown to older decoder filters) are simply ingnored.

I too have had this freeze frame problem. What I can't understand is why the video freezes when played with WMP, BSPlayer and Zoom Player but plays fine if I use DivX Player 2 Alpha (the one bundled with the Codec).
I don't mind using DivX Player but it won't play list files or open more than one file at a time:(

This is a pain when your movies are on two CDs.

I do not know where to find the older codecs (4.12, 5,0). Divx.com doesn't seem to have them. Where then?

DivX Player Version: 2.0 Alpha 4
seems to support/use player integrated decoding/playback

On a system without any divx filter (Divx 5.02, ... or ffdshow) installed,
none of the directshow filter based players (windvd, bspplayer, zoomplayer) can play the movie but DivX Player can.

Maybe this Divx Player integrated decoding shows better results then directshow filter decoding (on your system).

I would like to know on what source code this internal decoding is based on.

On another thread, someone suggested that color lever I had was to high (32-bit) and that I should lower it to 16-bit and it would help my problem. I am surprised, but it did. I never suspected something so simple.

Thanks to all who helped me. The videos now play without freezing.

Doesn't lowering your display to 16bit limit the colour range to 256 colours? I just tried it and my desktop became visually banded.

No, not on Win2k. 16-bit is thousands of colours, although I do not know how many. I do not have the bands and the DivX works great now, no freezing. ;)

are you sure your movie looks just as good as when at a higher color depth? I have always noticed when virtual dub was set at 16 bit color depth because of the fairly subtle banding type (not sure exactly how to describe it) color problems. Would you mind testing to see if virtual dub set at 16bit color depth output (for preview) looks/plays ok for you?

Does anyone know what bit depth you need (in RGB - i.e. windows monitor settings) to accurately display YU12? is 16 enough?

I was experiencing the same freeze problem on my AthlonXP 1900+ 512MB DDR Geforce4 MX440 system and it was solved as soon as I disabled the smooth playback option...now i am wondering, would it help if I get a better video card or is it simply a cpu processing power limitation?

Had the same problem with a Divx 5.02 pro encode. Uninstalled pro, installed DivX 5.02 free edition and the problem was gone. Perhaps the default playback options are different. I have now 5.01 pro back on (because I made a small mistake in the aspect ratio upon my fist encode) and I'll play around a bit with the playback options.
