View Full Version : The solid colour problem - DivX5++ any closer to resolving?

Just watched Legend 90 min 1 CD rip 704x304 XviD/OggVorbis/OGM on TV

The movie has plenty of dark shadowy scenes, and a few underwater scenes (looking up at the light). Images were sharp and clear throughout (ie probably no smoothing filters) but nowhere could I detect any trace of the blockyness on solid coloured areas like wall or sky, and especially underwater scenes, that spoils DivX3.11a rips.

I know much depends on the original DVD - many DVDs show at least some trace of blockyness (compression artifacts), some a lot - so the rip can hardly expect to do better, while retaining crispness.

Don't have much experience with XviD - just wondering if that freedom from blockyness is typical or not - thought I'd ask that in a DivX forum rather than a XviD one :D

The 10 or so DivX Pro5.0/5.0.1/5.0.2 rips I've done seem to be somewhat more free of blockyness than was 3.11a - tho not sure if that's because with 3.11a I always used NanDub's precise bilinear resizing; with DivX5 I'm mostly using Neutral Bicubic as Doom9 recommends. But blockyness is still noticeable to the observant eye.

Just wondering if this is something which can (theoretically) be overcome in future DivX versions, and if there is any particular push to do so?

thanx
