View Full Version : So much artefacts in Episode I why?

Hi,
i need help for Episode I (The Phantom Menace). I still use Gordian Knot 0.23b and DivX 3.11.
The subtitels and the player & codecs i put always on my CDs plus a bit cutt-difference there are still 1375 MB for the DivX & audiotracks. I hate 3 CD ripps, in my oppinion this is a waste of resources, but two CDs are normal when you make a DivX with aC3-sound.
- First i tried with a resolution of 576 x 240 and ac3 plus mp3 (520 MB for audio) the quality indicator was 0.259 bits/(pixel*frame), but the BivX has horrible artefacts.
- Second i tried with a resolution of 640 x 272 two times mp3 (203 MB for audio) the quality was 0.283 bits/(pixel*frame) but the results are not much better.
I mean hey how much more quality should i use isnt 0.283 enough? Tell me pls wich Codec should i use or can you give me a tip whats wrong with Episode I? Both times the underwater & space scenes have so much artefacts what to do?
I had an experience with another movie and the Xvid codec, but with BivX i had problems with sychron audio. Are the reason maybe the the max keyframe interval with 300 for this? How much max keyframe have DivX 3.11 alpha in Gordian Knot?
Sorry about my bad english, hope you understand me.

I am assuming when you are saying BivX you mean DivX, so here's what i would suggest.
When encoding use your MP3's and the smaller of the two resolutions and then click on ANTI-SHIT. This will get rid of all of the artifacts in your rip. The only thing you might want to do is lower the CD size so that you still fit on 2 CDs. Using Anti-Shit will sometimes increase the file size due to it adding key frames.
I was able to fit Ep 1 on Two CDs with the trailer and all of the deleted scenes with no problems.

No probs with me.I encoded it with both DivX 3.11a and DivX5

Anti-shit only gets rid of real messy errors, not of "all artefacts".
I think Episode I could be rather tough to compress because of its analog looking picture. I have a one CD rip of it and some scenes are really horrible (especially the desert scenes and the pod-race).
Make a compress test and you'll see how much bitrate you need! With Divx 5 using the pro-options you can probably get better results.

Perhaps I am wrong, but the way I understand Anti-Shit is that it compares the encoded frame to the original frame and if it finds any differences it will re-encode the frame as a key-frame. Hence if there was any artifacts, they would be gone, would they not?

i think episode 1 is very noisy . i did a 2cd rip with divx 4 and quality wasn't all that good. Maybe use a filter to smooth the image..

CaPPyD, I think Anti-Shit only encodes frames as keyframes that reach a certain threshold of artefacting. Of course you could set the threshold so low that it would re-encode every frame with only a little artefacting, but then I'd prefer to raise the bitrate in the first place to get a little more control over the filesize.
In my opinion using Anti-Shit only makes sense if it is set to re-encode a few scenes that look really shitty, not half of the movie.

Twinsen : hey how much more quality should i use isnt 0.283 enough?
... as theReal said - make sure you use the compression check. it really takes little time and usually saves a lot of hassle ( and reencoding, grr ). no harm in going higher than 0.283 for bits/(pixel*frame) either ;).
Twinsen : How much max keyframe have DivX 3.11 alpha in Gordian Knot ?
don't know (?) , but u can set minimum and maximum times between keyframes manually - imo _sometimes_ this improves quality with divx 3.11. do a first pass with nandub then open up the stats file in gknot ( "nandub files" tab ), then set ur kf's ( "stats file editor" tab ) by pressing "auto".
Twinsen : I still use Gordian Knot 0.23b and DivX 3.11.
Hope you meant gk 0.26, the new version contains a host of extra useful features uno :D ... u might want to try divx 5 out - i notice it seems to make some ( rare and very bad source, i must admit ) movies look better than what i could achieve with 3.11 alpha overall. the amount of smoothing that div 5 does kills lotsa detail and would ordinarily make regular 3.11;-) users shudder ... but every now and then it seems to do the job with bad sources for me anyway.

no problems at all :).

I encoded Episode I using GordianKnot 0.23b and DivX 3.11 (Nandub SBC) for a 2CD rip. Everything worked OK and the movie seems quite good.
used AC3, 576x240 (lowered H-module to fix aspect-ratio deviation)
sharp bicubic. The bits/pixel*frame was almost .29 (but I am not 100% sure - you can check this out). *NO NOISE FILTERS*
(if you don't succeed with the first...)
