View Full Version : Difference for a VCD between DVD2AVI's color ranges: PC scale and TV scale?

Hello there,
I've been using DVD2AVI and TMGEnc for already 2 years to make VCDs. And I already know that in DVD2AVI color ranges, the PC scale includes less information on original brightness than the TV scale, something like 8-235 for the PC scale while the TV scale has a 0-255 range (the difference can be easily seen with shady movie scenes). But I could also notice a second difference, epecially while converting animes: the video colors are less vivid in TV scale, while in PC scale the colors are exactly the same as in the source video. But the one thing that i'm not sure is once a VCD is made with the TV scale, are the colors less vivid also on a TV screen when I watch it with a home player, or does this side effect apply only when watching the movie on a PC screen? Because I'd like to keep the orignal brightness and colors from my movies, but for now I still seem to have this dilemma:
-PC scale: Original colors and less brigthness
-TV scale: Original brightness and less colors...

This only applies if you are in RGB mode or you are using VFAPI. So just use YUV mode and avoid the entire dilema.

Well in fact I'm using following the guide once available at flexion.org:

1-In DVD2aVI I use YUV mode, and I think also the VFAPI, to create a .d2v project file,
2-I convert the .d2v file to a pseudo avi with the VFAPIConverter made by the author of TMPGEnc,
3-I load the pseudo avi in VirtualDub to apply many filters like deinterlacing, resizing, and subtilting.
4-At last I put Virtualdub in frameserver mode to encode in mpeg VCD compliant with TMPGEnc.

So after all does my dilemma between PC scale and TV scale still seem to be there? And if yes is there another way for me to avoid it while keeping the virtualdub filters and TMPGenc?

1. VFAPI is based on [RGB 24-bit] always (for maximum flexibility) no matter which option (YUV or RGB) is selected.
2. For getting the best (mathematical) resolution you should use PC-scale (which is the one with the 0-255 range !!).
3. Only in the TMPGENC "quantize matrix" settings the way the mpg is actually encoded can be varied, which me too am not shure / have to try out on a film by film basis which settings gives the best results on TV.
