Cutting down on Video Mishaps?

Are there any procedures or programs that I could use to reduce the amount of "mishaps" that occur during playback? By "mishaps" I mean purple coloration that stays on the screen and the background visuals are slighty seen, or there are wierd randomized colorations (sometimes aided with relatively big squares) that appear and stay with the moving objects until the scene changes to a different angle. I'm sure many are familiar with what I'm referring to. Thanks in advance.

may be you have a cracked divx5 version

Keeping your resolution at multiples of 16 usually helps preventing that. And not using GMC and Q-Pel helps too.

Well it's not my rip, so it's not really my fault, and re-encoding will be useless. Oh well.

You could try playing that movie with the dffshow filter (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=23101) instead of DivX5's native one. I'm not sure if it will make a difference, but it's worth a shot.

not using gmc? i always use it and never have any colored blocks.

I didn't say it always gives errors, just that it might help preventing some :).
