The new version is great. I have used this in Gnot and there speed increase. Hope we see more versions.

I found it to be greater than 5 to 10%. I create D2v project file. I have not clocked it. I will do some testing for some vobs.

where does the speed come from? code optimization or different type of decoding?? if from decoding is there a difference compared to the "normal" dvd2avi???

This is the "normal" dvd2avi.
I've made some test but no improvement here.
I have an Athlon 1Ghz (not XP), so it seems normal.
Just test it by yourself.
A good way is to use Xvid with the "Null - test speed" encoding mode.
Open your VOB and choose "Save AVI" to encode directly with dvd2avi.

Athlon XP will not get a speed increase for it supports SSE only, and the code is for SSE2.

The speed come from using SSE2 instructions that operate with 128-bit XMM registers (MMX is 64-bit). It makes the code (IDCT routine) exactly twice shorter and about 30% faster (SSE2 instructions take longer to execute then MMX ones).

Yes it is a full replacement for the gnot package.
The speed increase in P4 computeris is about 25%

How do you see any speed increase, when the decoding in GKnot is done by mpeg2dec.dll, the dll version of DVD2AVI that is used as an Avisynth Plugin?

I cannot test that, as I don't own a P4.

I haven't checked out Jackei's new version. Didn't it come with a P4 mpeg2dec.dll? If not it's probably compatible with the save-oe P4 optimized version on my site at www.trbarry.com/MPEG2DEC2.zip. But I haven't tested that with 1.77.

P4 1 GHz
DVD2AVI project, no sound, SVCD Avisynth script, frame serving to cce 2.50, 3 min

DVD2AVI v1.76, MPEG2DEC.DLL (SSE)
speed = 1.222
DVD2AVI v1.77.1, MPEG2DEC2.DLL (SSE2)
speed = 1.262 +3.3 %

DVD2AVI v1.77.1 MPEG2DEC2.DLL (SSE2), with cropping in DVD2AVI
speed = 1.288 +5.4 %

Only very small improvements with SSE2.

There are some more DVD2AVI/MPEG2DEC test timings here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11442&perpage=20&pagenumber=10).

Starting about page 10, for a few pages.

Of course the more filters or extra overhead you have the smaller percantage gain you would notice. But every little bit helps.

This could be a really silly thing to bring up but in Doom9's news of 10th April this year there was a dvd2avi version 1.86. Can someone explain the difference between version 1.77 and version 1.86 - have we gone backwards or is there a number of different compiled releases (as in xvid)?

Should I be using version 1.86 or vserion 1.77??

The latest "stable" original version of DVD2AVI is version 1.76,
after long time no new update, then people try to add new feature
to the 1.76 become 1.86 (mostly in audio part), and even starts
new SourceForge Project.

And recently, the author of DVD2AVI come again with the 1.77
version which improvement for SSE2 (Pentium 4).

NB. Nic (from XviD forum) also try to make add the new feature
to the DVD2AVI which support 2 pass encoding, but....
not released to public yet until this time. ;(

I guess its my choice as to whether continue with version 1.86 or try version 1.77.. Do you know if the new features in 1.86 are or will be included within 1.77 and onwards?

To be honest, I'm still using the version 1.76,
since the additional feature in the 1.85/1.86
is useless for me :
1. mp3 encoding : I'm using vorbis :(
2. crop/resizing : I'm using avisynth :(
