View Full Version : Just keep your movie interlaced

While struggling with Star Trek TNG, I found something, I didn't know before. It may be worth testing.
When doing an interlaced DVD movie, try this:
Set conversion tab to "no deinterlacing" and also set in the advanced tab of the encoder both progressive frames and zigzag to OFF. Ignore nasty effect in preview!

The results seem superior to all deinterlacing methods I tried. I suspect this to work for all interlaced DVD material, because it seems logical to be the best replication of the source.

Perhaps someone else gives this a try and reports?

I like to add that it may be required to set the field order to a fixed setting (A or B) for this to work. If you characters move with strobe like effects, disabling auto and trying A or B might help.

Well, I answer here, as you started a new thread.
I tested your suggestion (advanced, no progressive, no zigzag, no linear)with the first chapter of STNG 105, and unfortunately, no go :( . I used simple resize. It certainly is better than "default" no deinterlacing, but still has that jumping back and forth effect. (Sigh :( )
I am happy though that it works for you, though I still wonder how.

Which CD ist that Chapter on? Did you set no deinterlace too?
I think it is better if we discuss all ST TNG related stuff in the other tread, because the problems there are rather peculiar to that material. I would like to see if this works for others (other movies)and under what circumstances.

Correct. I don't think you need to De-interlace if you watch the movie on you TV.

hi
i believe that interlaced source should be encoded as interlaced(for tv viewing) cause a tv normally shows the picture interlaced so you will not dee the interlaced lines on it (on the pc sure)...

@arianos
i think you problemm is the false field order..
cce always endodes as topfield first no matter what was selected...
maybe try this:download restream(http://mitglied.lycos.de/fitcd/)
open the encoded .mpv stream in it and uncheck topfield first, and check change tff-flags...and write it to the dir where dvd2svcd writes it files
rename the .mpv stream written by restream to the name of the original by dvd2svcd and start the rcovery function of dvd2svcd(muxing&cutting step)

i can imagine that will kill the jump effect

There is no problem on the PC either. Otherwise, why could you watch the interlaced DVD on the PC?

hi
i don`t know but i guess
maybe the software player deinterlaces the playback
cause my dv-avis are interlaced and bottomfield first when i play them in a player like windvd i looks normal but opend in virtual dub
or adobe premiere you clearly see the interlace lines...

If you want to just change the "field order" flag - you can use pulldown (which comes with dvd2svcd).

pulldown oldfile newfile -nopulldown -tff even

or

pulldown oldfile newfile -nopulldown -tff odd

As a side note - while this solved the "Matrix" effect, if also made the picture look bad (like the bitrate was VERY low). I have found that the only way to solve the problem was to do a deinterlace.

good luck

Just for future reference, and to close the thread properly (?):
Using ux3's suggestions and Restream solves the strobe effect on 109b2. Problem is solved (with ux3's suggestion but without restream)on 109b3pre22 and I assume on 109b3.

I used ux3's suggestions (as originally posted by mb1) on eps 101 and 102 PAL version and they came out supurb. Basically running with these settings now for all SVCD conversions with excellent results.
