Is there a tool to make simple editing tasks as risize, crop ect without having to uncompress and recompress the avi as with virtual dub. I am using divx 5.02.Thanks in advance.

that's probably not possible. check out gruel's detailed explanation:

(it relates to xvid and mpeg encoding in general)

cheers

This might be a silly comment (actually it most certainly is).

But if he has no need to modify the original file (i.e. reduce it's size etc.) but only wants to change the way the movie looks, wouldn't it be an acceptable solution to just create an "edited" avs file with avisynth to play instead of the original avi?

I know this doesn't save any type of resource, neither hard-drive space, nor memory or cpu usage still if there is only the need to change the look of the file this should be enough (or it was for me in a few occasions).

@rmagere:
if you're talking about playback only, then you're probably right. 'playing' an avs file with crop/resize/etc will work ok (but you'll probably need a stronger computer).

if, on the other hand, he wants to crop in order to reduce the file size and then distribute/archive, then .. this option is not a factor, since he'll have to re-encode..
