View Full Version : Copying from Tivo system questions

I am trying to copy a 2 hour program (sub DVD quality) from a DISH Network recorder (similar to Tivo) onto DVD+R. Here are the steps I currently perform:

1. Capture with Haup card using HuffyV compression YU2 640x480 (usually only lose 1 frame every 10,000) (PCM audio 16bit 48khz). Because of the size of the file I only capture 30ish minutes at a time (usually stop at commercials).

2. Take the avi and demux the audio to wav and TMPGEnc the video portion (video only setting) to 720x480 2 pass VBR 4000.

3. Softencode the wav file to AC3 2 channel.

4. Making sure the m2v file and ac3 file are the same name, I import into Spruce UP.

Here are my questions:

1. Should I continue using HuffyV compression? If I switched to another CODEC, I could probably fit the entire 2 hour program into 1 avi file and eliminate my issues in question 4.

2. I tried using CCE (and pulldown to set the fps correctly) but the resulting file was reversed and had strange colors (very pink and red as opposed to green and brown). It's obvious I don't have something set correctly, but for the life of me I couldn't figure it out. Any thoughts?

3. Is it better to go through the demux/ac3 encoding process? I have heard that AC3 will save me room allowing for a higher bitrate on my video. I had some problems with one file being offsynch on the audio, but I think that was due to converting from 44.1 to 48 so that I could soft encode (or it may have occured when I demuxed it from the encoded mpg file rather than the avi -- I forgot to do it to the original avi).

4. Since I end up have 7 or 8 different m2v/ac3 files for the 2 hour program, I would like to play them in sequence on my dvd. What is the best way to do this? I read that SpruceUP will allow you to set an end connection to automatically start another media asset, but I haven't accomplished this yet. TMPGEnc also didn't work very well combining the m2v files. Would it be better to remux the ac3/m2v files in TMPGEnc and then combine all of the resulting mpg files before importing into SpruceUP? Since the breaks occur at commericals, I don't mind a slight stutter, but I would prefer it be as fluid as possible (for the times where I capture a commercial free program and have to break it up).

Overload of questions but hopefully in the right forum. Any thoughts/experiences are greatly appreciated.

You're not going to get a seamless (or even near-seamless) transition by jumping from clip to clip during the authoring process. Your best option is to do your editing in something like Adobe Premiere and export the whole thing as one clip. It would be even easier if Premiere supported your capture card. Does it?

I capture things from my DirecTiVo unit for backing up to DVD. I use the Pinnacle DVD1000 which captures and edits in DVD-compliant MPEG2 format so it goes straight into the authoring software. I capture, edit out the commercials, then author. Trust me, what you're wanting to do is much better accomplished by editing your video the way you want it before authoring.
