maybe someone can help me on this one:

since my xp-installation once again fucked up, i am looking forward to a fresh reinstall when i find the time. now i want to backup this using ghost, but even though i have ghost 2002, it just doesn´t offer the option to back up writing to my ntfs-partition.

i read, that ghost 2002 should be able to handle writing on ntfs. i could write it to cd´s, but how would i write it back to my ntfs-partition than?

is there maybe something wrong with my ghost?
maybe i call the ghostbusters? ;)

You using a ghost boot disk?

If you're doing a fresh install anyway, you certainly don't want to overwrite it with corrupt data from the old partition. Don't bother with Ghost in this instance. Since you'll need to reinstall your software anyway, you may as well just back up your documents, etc. and copy them back after you're reinstalled everything.

I think this is a know problem with ghost, at least with some older versions. At work we have acctually had to install an extra disk, with a fat partition, to work around this.

The problem here is that a Ghost bootdisk uses PC-DOS which is unable to write to an NTFS partition because of the security built into NTFS. If you're using a boot disk, you must write the image to a file format that doesn't require secure access, such as FAT.

The reason Ghost can read from an NTFS partion is because it is reading from the drive at a lower level than NTFS. However writting to a drive is done at files system level (NTFS ,FAT etc...).

Hope this clears it up a bit :)
