Networking XP to win98

I have an ASUS Nforce a7n266 /dolby digital mobo it has a 100mbit realtek lan interface.
I Installed a 100Mbit CNet Pro200 card. Joined em with a crossover cable.

Ran thru network wiz. on th XP PC ....and set the TCP/IP to 192.168.000.001

Setup the TCP/IP on the win98 PII to 192.168.000.002

I can ping the PII from the XP PC and get a response....but the PII can't ping the XP....odd. Also...if I try to make both IP addresses the SAMe the PII will complain about an address conflict. So the PC's are seeing each other. O ...more weird stuff ...if I setup auto ping on the PII ...when I am SHUTTING DOWN or STARTING UP Win XP on the XP PC....I GET RETURNS on the pings. That stops as soon as I login to the XP PC.

Same workgroup ....and SOMETIMES the XP name will appear in the Network Neighbourhood of the PII PC. But when clicked it is "inaccessible".

Man I did this with NT 3.51 & NT4.0 but this Win XP sux. Any ideas

You have to create a user on the XP machine with the same name and password as on the '98 machine. Also don't take 192.168.0.1/2, that segment is reserved. Take 192.168.1.1/2

Well the prob was not XP or 98 or ME....whew!!!:D

It was PC-Cillin firewalling my TCP/IP.:angry:

I wasted 1.5 days and 3-win98 reinstalls looking for a prob.

I realised when PC-cillin came up on the XP machine to autoscan.....down went my ping.

Lucky i had the win98 system on auto ping during the XP boot process.

You can use either address space. As stated in RFC1918, the following are all available for private network addressing...

10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 (10/8 prefix)
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 (172.16/12 prefix)
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 (192.168/16 prefix)

I had a problem similar to this relateing with windows millenium. The computer running that OS would not show up on the network. I had to run an update on it and there ended up being a network fix relateing with xp.
