hi
since a few weeks im a owner of DV-camera,and i want to put my clips
on(x)-svcds,but the prob. is that my mustek clone only have a 5x cd-rom and there for no able to play bitrates over ~3400kbs (like most standalones) i did some readings and figured out that`s possible
to take a pc-dvdrom and put it onto the ide-connector of an standalone...
i opened the case put my pioneer dvd-rom on the ide connector and
was suprised it works!! i tested a rw(authored by ulead`s dvd-movie-factory) that in my standalone with build in dvd-drive takes up 1/2 minute to load .with the pionner it loads in a second...

i didn`t do a test with very high-biratesxsvcd`s yet, but im very sure it works...for a 40xcd-rom 6000kb`s!!

that`s very good for me so i can do xsvcd`s with 20mins dv-video on it in very highquality...

im going to buy a second hand dvd-rom and scsi-case and build my own
"hellmachine"
i think this will be fun..
what do you think about this?

Hi
Is there an "easy way" or a "how to" to change the drive of a standalone dvd player ?
I have a sony dvp-s525d and would like to play cdrs that play a higher velocyties than 2x.
I think that it would be the way to play mini-dvds.

Cheers !

hi,
for changing the drive:just open the case and put off the ide-cable from the build in drive, and connect it to a new dvd-rom,thats it..
im going to put the new dvd-rom drive into a small scsi case(with powersupply) cause i think this will look nice...

minidvd:changing the drive for playing mini-dvd`s will have no sense cause:every dvd-player has 2lasers 1fordvd and 1for c`d -playback..
when playing a dvd(or minidvd) the player takes the dvd-laser with only 1xspeed,but 1x speed on dvd means up to9800kb`s ,on 1xcd something about 560kb`s ...this is the point ...so if your player doesn`t play minidvd yet it will not play by changed drive..if it plays already you can`t get better results(maybe a little when having probs. with the build in..)..
for me its the following:my player doe`snt play minidvd`s so i decied
to changing the drive to a 48x so i can have the same quality like a minidvd(sure without animated menus and ac3 )
...

please note that most "branded" players like the sonys have proprietary drives (loaders) and do not use a standard interface like IDE.
Therefore you can not simply replace it by a PC/IDE DVD-ROM.

Drive swapping will only work with Sampos, Musteks, Cyberhomes etc.
I have tried the Toshiba SD-M1612 DVD-ROM with Sampo620, Cyberhome AD528, Mustek V300 and SEG los angeles successfully.

Using this drive I can even playback DVD-RAM. (with DVD-Video content)
And I got rid of the "spin up" problem found with most other PC DVD-ROM drives: The drive dynamically lowers speed as much as possible to avoid spin noise.

have fun

@eiguschema,
ì guess you are right..i can only speak for mustek...
but the easiest way to know if your standalone is connected by ide is to open the case...but mostly this kills the gurantee:D ..
