got a very simple question here
tmpeg's default bitrate for option: constant bitrate is 2520. if i understand correctly, higher bitrate = bigger file. so if i reduced the bitrate, will it result in a smaller file? and so will the svcd still be standard compliant? thx

Yes, a lower bitrate will make a smaller file (poorer quality though), and it will still be compliant as long as you don't go too low.

max video bitrate alone : 2600
No minimum video bitrate limitation in the standard, but you can face issues (sync, image blocking/jerking/stuttering) depending our your player (either software or hardware) and muxer.

sounds like you might be after smaller files without sacrificing quality or compatibility...VBR is the way to go. you'll get good quality with reasonably small file sizes. either use 2 pass VBR in TMPG(good quality, but slow) or 4 or 5 pass VBR in CCE(excellent quality, faster, but expensive)

Yeah i use cce and mostly i do 5 pass vbr, also all movies except ones over 2 1/2 hours are done with 2 cdr's 80 minute ones. Since my dvd player the apex 5131 is a 3 disk changer it really is sweet 2 be able to just change disks now i'm waiting for a hacked bios for the 5131 that will switch disks after one is done:)
