I am using GKnot .26. when i click on Autocrop in this example it chooses the settings Left 0 right 5 top 11 bottom 15.

Now the guide says to use autocrop and leave it at that or vary to suit your self.

Now I also read that you must have the crop pixels divisible by 4 for vertical and 2 for horizontal - or was it the other way around. Heck I just decided that make them both divisible by 4 and i cant go wrong.

I forgot the reason for this, but think its either to avoid a coloured border, or to avoid a crash later in encoding.

If its so important to have them divisible by 4, then why doesnt Autocrop set that and to a lesser extent why doesnt the Doom9 guide mention that? Or is it not important at all.

Under the autocrop option you will see autocrop all. This will take care of all these concerns for you automatically.

Please read on what Dividee says:
Second, in YUY2 the left crop value and the crop width must be divisible by 2. If you pass odd numbers, avisynth rounds them to even numbers. Left crop value is rounded down, width is rounded up, so 691 is rounded to 692, which is a multiple of 4.
