wondering if the aspect ratio should always be set to DAR 4:3 or if it's dependant on the source?
some guides i've read said it should be 4:3, some didn't say anything at all about it. can someone experienced tell me?

This has been answered about a hundred times in this forum...
Because almost none standalone can play other aspect ratios than 4:3 as SVCD.

my pioneer dv333 plays 16:9 svcd
But maybe (I´m pretty sure) your friends` player doesn´t (or your neighbours).
For good compatibility to other players stay with 4:3, for your own pleasure choose 16:9 ;)

so, your saying if ur doing svcd....i guess i should have been specific...what if ur final is dvd not svcd, then u choose what the movie is
For dvd of course use 16:9 or 4:3.
Above remarks are all about doing svcd.
I always use 4:3, even if movie is 16:9. Authoring app has a selection for 4:3 or 16:9 itself and this always works.
