View Full Version : Smart Ripper, D2S and Outlaw Star

Fisrt off let me start by saying that I know we arent supposed to use Smart ripper to rip DVDs and D2S because of the audio deley. I have a few questions about this. I am trying to rip Outlaw Star. It has 2 audio tracks on it. The first audio track (0x80) is Japanese. The second audio track (0x81) is English. When I try to rip Outlaw Star with vstrip or the Internal Routines it always rips Japanese. I have tried to select the second audio track on the conversion tab of D2S and it wont let me select the second track unless I am ripping the first track as well.

What I dont understand is how come I cant select only the second audio track in D2S? If I select both of the audio tracks then how do I select only the english one when I am converting? If I cant select what audio track to use when I am converting is there a way to change the audio track when the movie is playing in my stand alone?

Now on to smart ripper. How come D2S wont work with it? I have used it in the past and it works fine with some stuff (oddly enough I rippied some Cowboy Bebop DVDs that are made by the same company that makes Outlaw Star and have the Japanese as the first audio track even though its a region 1 DVD, and I had no problems). I have also tried DVD Decrypter and I get the same audio delay. Does anyone have any idea about this? Any help is greatly appreciated.

When the Vob's are ripped all the audio tracks are ripped so the ripper shouldn't stop you from being able to select a particular audio track. What selects and converts the audio from the VOB is a program built into DVD2SVCD and not a standalone product that converts like most of the others are (ie. BeSweet, CCE, Madplay, etc...) The problem you seem to be having is with DVD2SVCD itself.
Do all the audio tracks show up in the list?
Are any of them SDDS? This is not supported.
Have you made sure the english sountrack is selected and has the number 1 next to it?

As for why SmartRipper doesn't work sometimes nobody really knows for sure. It is probably the way it writes the data that is not compatibile. If you have a pre 2.4 version (2.39 or before) try that. The most problems seemed to start right about at the 2.4 release.
DVDdecrypter is a little different story as it is more of a forceful way to rip DVD's and often rips data you didn't want or expect.

@jason28:
Re-rip with internal routines, the already ripped (by SmartRipper or DVDdecrypter) ifo+vobs. It's fast, being already on the disc. This (stupid?) method often gets me out of situations that Internal routines or VStrip cannot handle when being the first rippers. In my case, I cannot select subtitles from some UFO (old tv series)episodes.

@markrb
I thought when you ripped the vob files you would rip only the audio track that you wanted. When I listen to the .vob files it was in Japanese, so therefor I thought that when I converted it, it would be in Japanese. After you posted last night I converted the files and they were in English. So I guess I am all set as far as ripping is concerned.

@Arianos
Thanks for the tip, I will have to remember that.

Now on to the next problem. No matter what rippper I use, I have about an 8 sec audio delay. The movie starts and 8 secs later nthe audio starts. I tried messing with the settings in bbmpeg to get the audio to line up. I couldnt get it to go. the even weirder thing is that I converted one episode and it worked the audio was set perfectly. Then I did another episode and it had the audio deley. Here is the log file from the episode that worked:

I'm also in the middle of trying to encode Outlaw Star. I don't know if this information will be helpful to you at all, as I've been encoding with DivX rather than for (S)VCD. But I've had a TON of trouble with the audio as well.

Originally, when I was using Vidomi, it kept inserting the Japanese track even though I specifically selected English (0x081) -- usually though, the first episode would be English, the rest Japanese or silence.

Then, I learned about the wonders of Gordian Knot, and started using that. So I ripped Outlaw Star with SmartRipper 2.40, and then used DVD2AVI to parse it out and "de-film" it. (forgive lack of technical details here).

When I encoded 'normally' using the normal settings, part of the movie would have sound, and the rest would not. After looking around at log files, I found out that BeSweet would encounter an error (E7: CRC) after a minute into that episode's track. However, instead of chugging on, BeSweet would stop at that point:

As you can see, it stopped after just 1 minute of the 22 minute episode. The ONLY settings that I've gotten this to work successfully is to deselect BeSweet transcoding, and use the 'normal' MP3 settings under the Audio tab -- the optimizations for the 'experts only' setting that they define in the Gordian Knot/Divx5 tutorial (http://www.doom9.org/gknot-divx5.htm) also cause Azid (can't remember which) to stop after the 1 min or so point where the CRC error is. Also, setting 'normal' settings and keeping BeSweet enable stills forces it to stop.

So, I'm not sure if this info will help or not... perhaps if you tried these settings it might clear up your audio problems, if the original VOBs are so screwed up?

I was under the impression that BeSweet (and others) when encountering a CRC error would just insert silence, but for Outlaw Star, this doesn't seem to be the case.

I can reproducibly bring this about with Episodes 2, 5, and 8, at least.

Let me know if you'd like any more info

Well I figured out what the problem was. I forgot that I upgraded to the new version of BeSweet. For some reason this caused a problem with audio delay. I dont know why.

@colordog
I noticed that you are using the newest version of BeSweet. If you change to an older version you might be able to get it to work. If you go to DSPguris web page I think you can find 1.3b12 there. That is what I used and I didnt have any problems.

Jason

I usually use internal routines. However, sometimes SmartRipper is VERY helpful. The most important reason would be to copy the entire DVD to your HD for viewing later - "Backup" feature. In this case, you would use Smart Ripper to rip all of the files to a folder named video_TS. Windvd will now see your hard drive as the DVD player. You can watch the entire movie and all of the special features from your HD.

If you have done "back-up" mode, you can load the correct ifo file into DVD2SVCD and skip the ripping step. This should pose no problem for DVD2SVCD.

Another important place to use SmartRipper is to do individual episodes from a DVD. Open up SmartRipper. Select the program chain (PGC) for the episode you want. Under settings, select File-Splitting, max file size, size 1000 MB,and check "copy IFO". This will create an IFO file that can be used by DVD2SVCD without ripping again. "Internal Routines" only selects the largest PGC of the largest IFO thus failing when the PGC isn't the one you wanted. "vStrip" allows you to select individual epidsodes but can fail when the PGC you want begins in anything other than the first VOB file.

Note: when you load this IFO file into DVD2SVCD, you will still have to do a drop down under the IFO in the Conversion tab and select which time the ifo/vobs represent. If you change to another tab you will have to do the dropdown again on the conversion tab because it resets itself automatically.
